The original was a classic to be watched over and over again. The recent ones which were officially the prequels 1,2,&3 had much better special effects but i found the filmed lacked any magic or spark. Bad chemistry and bad characters.

Which one do you prefer?

I enjoy the special effects in the first films much more than the subsequent prequels that came out in recent years. Particularly because most of the effects were actually in the scene itself, rather than being tacked on like a Colorforms toy. I cringe every time I see an actor having a fake battle with a monster that doesn't exist and will be added on later via CGI.

Also, some of the characters in the newer films, such as Jar Jar Binks were just embarassing. Not to mention, did anyone else notice how bad the makeup and outfits were in these new ones. Ewan McGregor hair color was so fake looking.

The original 3 were classics before they kept modifying them. The last three films told the story but were a poor excuse for lots of special effects & merchandising. I am afraid Disney may do worse.

There is a possibility that Disney does not screw the pooch with these next films. I know that is a hard sentence to really respect but I felt the last films (which were the first) in the series were that bad. Unless Disney gets Michael Bay to direct these films they may just have a chance to show us all.

Honestly, I enjoyed both sets of Star Wars - the originals and the prequels - almost equally. I appreciated fleshing out the storylines, and they were made so far apart from each other, that it was easy (for me) not to compare them or pick them apart too much. However, Star Wars is one of those franchises that it doesn't really matter what they do with it - they can do anything, and it will make money. Even if they tick off the fans, it will make them money.

That's the downside... I fear that Disney will phone these movies in instead of treating them with the time-honored respect they deserve. Here's hoping they get it right.

The original and prequel trilogies are better. So far I have yet to see how Disney will transfuse fresh blood into one of George Lucas' masterpieces now that it owns the franchise. I cannot prejudge how Disney will do it, but let's hope that it will remain true to keeping the Star Wars franchise as is. As of the moment, I am still watching all six Star Wars films, as they continue to remain timeless and they never age. I also appreciate the revisions to the original trilogy as a retcon, such as replacing the original voice of Boba Fett with the voice of Jango Fett (Jason Wingreen to Temuera Morrison), the appearance of the Galactic Senate and the Jedi Temple in Episode VI, etc.

I saw episode 4 when it first hit the screens in 1977 (i remember the mall and who I went with lol). Although the prequels may of had better special effects the the "originals", the special effects used in those prequels were on par with "todays" special effects. However, the one in 1977 set the standard for special effects that no other movie had come close to achieving.

I'm going to have to agree with AUFred that I'm skeptical Disney can work any magic for the Star Wars franchise. If like me you've read some of the books by Timothy Zahn about what happened after book 6 then its down hill from there. I liked the original films better than the prequels. (I even have the box set) I think that the recent films just took the mystery out of Darth Vader and reduced him to a whining teenager. This is definitely one of the instances where more money spent on special effects does not mean a better film.
