Chances are the the girl and guy had an attraction, they did it, may have feelings for each other, then the parents found out. Parents may of wanted to keep it on the low, but having the baby made it news to everyone. To save face, they went after the boy. The judge probably saw what was going on and didn't want to kill the life of the young man for a bad judgement call, but the parents forced the issue.

Again, the family had NO problem taking the money until the guy decided he wanted to be a part of the child's life.

Give it a 50/50 chance it's a trailer trash story gone wrong picked up by the news because the girls family / attorney wants public opinion on their side.

There's a difference between rape and statutory rape, though. This case is a muddled up mess.
