The 609 carrier digits are Southwestern Bell owned. Up until 2 years ago you could tell who had what carrier just by those carrier digits. Then they started allowing numbers to be ported between Cell companies so someone could get a different phone/plan but keep the same number.
It's the same through out the US.
348 is Sprint, 704 is Nextel (now the same), Centennial was 385. But now that they can be ported between the three it's hard to tell.
