They do not OWN Mazda, Ford has 1/3 interest (aka stock) in Mazda. Mazda's parent company is Japanese owned.

What's confusing about it? Ford owns 33.4% of Mazda's stock/interest. Mazda, as a corporation in itself owns the other 66.6%. Meaning Mazda owns Mazda, but not the entire company.
