Tenia- I had
The difference is that tuve reffers to something you had not so much time ago.
I had to go to the movies with him yesterday
Tuve que ir al cine con el ayer
And Tenia is what you would say you had to do for example when you were little.
When I was little, I had to take care of my brother all day
Cuando era pequeña, tenia que cuidar de mi hermano todo el dia.
