We had a filly born last week that probably would have died if no one had been there. She was born with dangerously low blood sugar levels. Not sure why. She just lay there and shivered and didn't attempt to stand or anything. We called the vet and they came out, ran her some fluids with glucose and after that she was fine. :D

There are times when it's a breech birth (foal coming butt end first instead of head first) that the mare can't deliver it. By that point, though, you've probably lost both the mare and the foal. I've never heard of a successful c-section in horses. :(

They generally try to turn the foal don't they? To avoid breech births?

 Yeah but by the time they realize that it's coming backwards it's often too late because they don't know something's wrong until the mare has broken her water and nothing's coming out. It's possible to turn a foal but time is a factor. Once the mare breaks water the foal has to be born fairly quickly or it will suffocate. It's also possible to pull the foal out backwards if you can get its hind legs but that doesn't always work either because there's a high risk of the hips getting hung up in the mare's pelvis. Basically breech births suck. You almost always lose the foal and often lose the mare too. :( Thankfully, I've never experienced one.

When I was in Kentucky I had a couple of mares that had their foals get stuck during birthing because the foals were so big. The one mare the foaling manager and I were pulling on the foal's front legs trying to get him out and we were pulling the mare around the stall in the process. We finally got him out and I have no idea how he didn't have cracked ribs. He was perfectly fine. :D We didn't have as much trouble with the other mare's foal but that one ended up with cracked ribs because of the tight squeeze. She had to be on stall rest for awhile but healed up fine.

I'm not sure what we would have done if we hadn't been able to get the colt out. I was beginning to wonder but then we finally got him un-stuck. Interesting stuff foaling is.

I don't know if more risky. I'd say 90% of the time the foal is born and all is good. It's just the odd time when there's trouble and then it's a lot harder to correct than in humans.

Oh look at me! I'm still awake! :willy_nilly:

I know right!?:willy_nilly: Except instead of the dog/cat, two small kids and Bryan wearing his shoes through the condo.
