I didn't wanna jack the execution thread too much, but I pose this as a thought-provoking exercise:

Would you kill a person in self-defense? If there was no doubt in your mind that the person intended to kill you and the only way for you to survive was to kill them, would you?

Say you were walking down the street and got jumped by a guy with a knife. Somehow in the struggle you manage to get the knife and stab him. He dies from the wound. Were you justified in killing him?

And of course, you're all welcome to respond, I just wanted to get his attention :)

I would say yes, if it really was self defense. If you had already overpowered him and restrained him though, then I would say it isn't self defense but man slaughter.

I would kill him with no second thoughts. I'm curious to see how AEF responds though, what with how strongly he feels about human life all being equal and stuff :)

Your choise but you can't get wound up with him now if this turns into a 100 page debate repeating the same thing over and over seeing you provoked it!;)

I would definately. I wouldn't think twice about it. I am a pretty small guy in stature and I have been in some scraps with some of the biggest guys you would ever want to meet, but when it comes to that sort of stuff watch out because dynamite comes in small packages.

Would you kill a person in self-defense?
If I had to in order to ensure the safety of myself and others, yes.

If there was no doubt in your mind that the person intended to kill you and the only way for you to survive was to kill them, would you?
Yes.

Say you were walking down the street and got jumped by a guy with a knife. Somehow in the struggle you manage to get the knife and stab him. He dies from the wound. Were you justified in killing him?
Yes, it was just.

My 2 cents on the 'revenge' part of this issue and the death penalty issue: Revenge should not be the intention in the taking of life. Killing someone legally (war, death penalty, etc.) should always be about protection and/or justice, not revenge - protection of one's self, one's family/neighbor, one's society, one's country etc.

Do you think of me as pacifist? I am far from that.

Human life to me is one of the most important things in this world. Although, if my life was threatened, such as this guy with a knife and I wrestled the knife away from him, I would run away. BUT if the option of running away with his weapon was not possible and it came down to me against him, one man walks away type deal, I'm obviously going to not let him kill me. I would have to either incapacitate him or worse in order to survive. Thats the only situation were I think its justifiable for a person to take another person's life. Although it is a very terrible situation I would want to avoid at all costs, defending your own life is paramount.

What's wrong with being a pacifist? (don't mind me, it's late and I'm a bit drunk, thus, I'm a pacifist and in general agree with AEF quite often)
BTW, I think he made you this question because he thought you follow Objectivism and disagree with taking a life of a human in all cases.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with being a pacifist, I'm just wondering if he thinks of me as one. :)

Haha, I am so far away from being an objectivist its hilarious.

I think nobody in this thread is, but it's either that or I don't see any possible way to comparing death penalty to self defense

Another thing, I could agree more with this

I didn't ask this because I thought you were a pacifist. In fact, I was hoping you would answer the way you did because to say you wouldn't kill in the hypothetical situation would simply be insane.

Here's my point that I want you to consider:

To you (and everyone else on here), taking the life of a would-be murderer who hasn't killed yet is justifiable. But to kill a serial murderer who was convicted in a fair trial by a jury of his peers makes people hypocrites and should be illegal.

Do you see a flaw in this logic? Do you see where I'm coming from?

The death penalty isnt self defense in any stretch of the imagination.

They aren't one and the same, but I think comparisons can be made.

When your life is at risk, you have to defend yourself, that has nothing to do with the subject being a would-be murderer, it's about your life, not his death.
