Push to call blasphemy a crime

THE divide in world opinion over what constitutes free speech will be on display again this week at the United Nations, where arguments over a proposed blasphemy law were an annual feature for a decade.

This time it is the global reaction to a YouTube video that disparages Islam's prophet Muhammad that is sure to roil the meeting of the UN General Assembly.

Muslim leaders have vowed to discuss the offensive video from their UN platforms, sowing concern among free-speech activists of a fresh push toward an international law that would criminalize blasphemy. Human rights groups and Western democracies resisted such a law for years and thought they had finally quashed the matter after convincing enough nations that repressive regimes used blasphemy laws to imprison or execute dissidents.

''I expect that we'll regress to where we were a couple of years ago,'' said Courtney Radsch, program manager for the Global Freedom of Expression Campaign at the non-profit group Freedom House.

''Human rights are not about protecting religions; human rights are to protect humans,'' she said. ''Who is going to be the decision-maker on deciding what blasphemy is?''

At one end of the spectrum is France, where a magazine on Wednesday published cartoons of Muhammad as a naked, cowering man to underscore a point that even the most offensive expression should be protected.

At the other end of the spectrum is the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, who disappointed many free-speech activists last week by suggesting limitations to freedom of speech when it was ''used to provoke or humiliate''.

For years the Organization of Islamic Co-operation, a 57-member bloc of countries, has proposed a resolution criminalizing the defamation of religion. By last year free-speech proponents had persuaded so many countries to ditch the cause that no new defamation-of-religion resolution was proposed.

Now, Turkey heads the Organization and the Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has said he would raise the topic in New York next week.

Ridiculous... Whose the dictator on whats blasphemous? Fuck the protection of religious groups. We need to stop putting them on a pedestal every time someone cries like a 5 year old for being made fun of.

I say have your religion as long as it doesn't involve doing anything harmful to another living thing. I know its not simple thing there are grey areas but we all know where the line is.
The only reason we step over it is because some of us just plain and simple can't be civil.

and as far as this video is concerned read the other details not said here
the attack was planned before the video they just used the video as mirage of reasoning

If there are many people that follow a religion that brings them to the thought of one race world domination are fighting someone its cause they want to kill them

I repsect peoples right to religion as long as it dosen't affect anyone else. Blasphemy laws are silly though. Its about insulting someone there isn't even conclusive proof existing and even if there is a god, if he's supposed to be so powerful, I'm sure he can fight his own battles. Bit on an arrogant insult if people thing god needs them to fight his battles.

Why not ban blasphemy?

If fits right in with the nanny state

Along with the fantasy that Muslims in the mid east are peace loving. Which is proven to be false every time they get insulted. Sadly the nutjobs seem to control the masses over there as every time there is an excuse to riot in the name of Allah they get the alleged moderates to follow into the streets right in tow.

Apples and Oranges

Tell me the last time tens of thousands of Christians rioted at abortion clinics

Tell me the last time tens of thousand of Christians protested at funerals of gays

You can't

Because the rest of the Christians recognize nuts and are not scared shitless of speaking out about those nuts

Show me where the Muslims have responded in kind to condemn their nuts

You can't

That is a pretty shitty analogy on your part

If such a law passes mark another win for the radicals.
A non radical doesn't act radical over a movie or plan an attack in advance to embassies.

Thing about the movie is they just took parts of the quran and made a poor looking movie from it.
Nothing new..same has been done regarding parts of the bible
Akin to similar of what a SNL skit would consist of...take something and make it into a comedy.
Nothing to get upset about....Dont like it dont watch it.

If they want to do something constructive...then have a law that outlaws radical reactions...such as protests of "death to the USA"
Here it would be a crime to protest and say death to {place a nation here}...its a death threat.
So IMO this proposed blasphemy law would be one sided anyway....heck in many nations you cant even practice Christianity...some have the punishment of death....you can be rest assured they are telling them all about their religion while doing such.
No thanks we arent ready for such a law yet...and if we were then we wouldnt need it anyway

There is a big difference in scale and ....to the best of my knowledge....no one has died from their radicalism and the Westboro Church is condemned by most Christians openly.

Something else to consider....along with the concept of these proposed blasphemy laws comes a loss of national sovereignty with a move towards a global governing body.......whose basics would obviously tilt toward supporting the favored mentality of that governing body.
As it's the push from the Islamic sector for these religious laws, all nations that are not Islamic theocracies would be seen in defiance of sharia law by radical Islamicists .....and a blasphemy under proposed laws.

That would not be a good time to be a member of the UN for most of Western Civilization and the UN would outlive it's purpose as a forum to reconcile national conflicts as it's new function leads to imposing them.

Defending their religious beliefs, that is fine, speak it, wear it, but don't try to change the other people's lives cause they don't believe as you do unless they want you to
and those that don't believe don't try to change the lives of the people who believe unless they want you to
and anyone who tortures or kills another person gets killed but there must be rock solid evidence
age limit is 18 on legal sex and 21 on legal drugs
If your religion involves harming another animal or human it will be a religion not allowed to exist and if you do any of the harming of animals or humans you will be kilt.
there will be no race options on documents
there will be no borders

A man as smart as yourself (no sarcasm intended) should realize that for the most part, Christian lives don't suck as much as those in the middle east. You also forget the "mob mentality" and the fact that the people know their religious governments will let them get away with crap in the name of Islam.

I for one and glad that we keep religion separated from the state.

Most men whose lives suck in the cities in the United States join gangs. Those in the mideast join religious groups lead by zealots sanctioned for the most part by their government.

The thing is as much as people like to believe religion and state are separate that's not entirely true. I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic but religious views guide political agendas constantly.

People being people, it's bound to happen. However, we do have safeguards in place to ensure it doesn't get to out of hand. We may have a long way to go, but by the same time, we've come a long way.

It's a bitch when the majority can't control the minority.

And yes, I realize some would argue that the rich run everything anyways (here in the U.S).
