Progressive Rock/Metal

Whats your opinion on Progressive rock and metal.

After I discovered this fantastic sound, I've decided that it's my one of my favourite sounds for Rock and Metal. Bands like Pink Floyd, Rush, Dream Theater, and Opeth are among my favourites.

I can't say that I count any of those bands as favourites. In fact I don't like Dream Theatre and well, I won't get into Opeth.

However, prog-rock/metal is good stuff. Try some Porcupine Tree since you like Pink Floyd. They've gone through different stages though. Their last few albums have been more prog-metal, but not as heavy as like, Opeth, and some of their early albums were just odd... and some of their albums were psychedelic. I recommend the albums, Stupid Dream and In Absentia myself. Luckily their myspace has their greatest song on it, Trains:

Another good prog-metal band, and I use the term loosely because they incorporate a lot of different genres, is maudlin of the Well. I love them. Their album, 'Bath' is one of my favourites ever.

There's also The Mars Volta but I'm sure you've heard them.

The Between the Buried and Me album, Colors, is some nifty prog-metal, as well.

Well, prog-rock/metal are pretty broad terms so I could go on for a while so I guess this is good!

Dream Theatre sound so like Pink Floyd at times it makes me chuckle.

I'd recomend King Crimson and Focus

Depends on how heavy the music is.... I like bands like Disturbed & Godsmack and Drowning Pool.

i know this... i posted because hey, i dont really understand the whole prog rock thing.. i dont understand the hype. was making a point i guess by posting what i consider to be "real metal". no offense to your likes or dislikes though. to each their own. like i said i personally just dont understand it.

You probably haven't listened to much of it then. If you like Death Metal, I'm sure you'd like Opeth.

Eh, Progressive is pretty much more of an acquired taste, and isn't even supposed to be mainstream.

I disagree. If we were stuck to only one subgenre, or even worse, one genre, then a lot of people would get sick of music altogether after a short while. The more genres and subgenres, the more variety of sound, allowing more people to enjoy music that fits their tastes.

Well alotta times the differences in subgenres are so damn minuscule it's confusing as shit.

Yeah, it can be confusing. Especially since a lot of bands are of several genres and subgenres

Yeah I don't like genres in general, but I realize having them makes it easier to talk about music.

Mase, what Porcupine Tree stuff did you get?

Some more recommendations:
There's a band called Wolverine who are pretty cool, but I've only ever heard one of their albums. So get the album "Still."

A band I'm not really a fan of but people seem to like them... Pain of Salvation. People seem to like the albums "Remedy Lane" and "The Perfect Element Part 1" the most.

Agalloch can be classified as prog-metal too. Any album by them is great.

Mastodon could probably be classified as it too. "Blood Mountain" is awesome.

Spock's Beard is a band that draws more influence from Genesis, so it's more poppy than metal. But it's still prog.

The Flower Kings, progressive rock, as well.



And I can't believe I didn't think of King Crimson.

My brother has most of their albums, apparently. I've listened to the albums, Stupid Dream, Fear of a Blank Planet, and I'm currently listening to Lightbulb sun

You definitely have to check out In Absentia, like I think I said earlier. Voyage 34: The Complete Trip is also a really trippy album
