It's Benitez's team still. Don't try to claim otherwise.

Unfortunatley Benitez did his best to alienate some of his best players just before he left... Alonso and Mascherano being fine examples lol. He's an objectionable fat cunt I'll give him that.

Alonso was never alienated, Benitez tried his best to keep those players. He couldn't keep Alonso because if someone offered you money, you will do the same...that is go where the big money is. These days it is all about the money. If FIFA put a cap on the money that players earned, I think we would see a different football passion from all players

Alonso left a sinking ship to join Spain's second club. I think Masch had just had enough of English football altogether although he is struggling with the La Liga style still, he's a bit too physical and certain things you can get away with in England, you can't in Spain.

Alonso left because he felt the manager didn't have faith in him.
He tried to sell Alonso on two seperate occasions to Juventus, to finance his move for Gareth Barry.
Now Barry is alright at best, but Alonso is world class.

the best players would still go to the clubs that win trophies

And then he signed Aquilani. Who turned out to be a crock and even when he played he was average at best. Now he's at Juve licking his wounds. Barry's an ok player, I'll say that, but not someone you should go to that much trouble for. Plus City have Yaya Toure who is a pretty good player.

The world knew Aquilani was a crock. Yet Benitez signed him anyway. It baffles the mind...

It only takes a few bad results. I mean Liverpool have had more than enough of them this season I know. I'm not so sure they'll go down but they will certainly not be in a position which is akin to what Liverpool should be finishing in. And really if they want to attract the bigger names in Europe they have to be playing Champions League football, which is the big attraction these days, and has been for a number of years, but at the moment it's not happening for them. And to be honest with the gulf which has been created between them and teams like Tottenham with their better squad and team and Man City and their unlimited bank balance, and of course the established top 3, it's going to be really hard to get back in that mix of teams.

This said I expect them to beat Everton on Sunday. Everton without Cahill is a much different team for the worse than they are with him.

Martin O'Neill won't take over surely... That is a huge step down for him. If he waits 6 months, the Liverpool job will be open.

Both are failing clubs, but one is a failing club with spending power.
