Yeah, most mental illnesses are passed down through the generations.

The reason I asked is because my cousin (a week younger than I...the little sister of the banana girl) had her baby 19 days after I had Xane (the oldest), and she had continued smoking, drinking, and doing drugs...and Stephen turned out to be highly autistic with several disabilities. His physicians have all stated that it was a direct result of what she had done. *shrugs* Some days I believe the studies and journals, and some I don't...

I dont know what its like in every state but here if a baby is born with drugs in their system, then the baby is taken away by DHS. Which I think is a good thing.

I think the earlier stages of pregnancy are the most critical where the child is most subceptable to deformaties with a mother that is using while the baby is still developing. Either way it is still alarming to see, having a baby is a large responsibility, and requires life changes and sacrifices.

Re: RE: Pregnant women and smoking

They usually threaten with calling Child Protective Services if the mother does not enroll in some sort of program to get herself off substances. But then again, they're so swamped that they really don't take any case as a priority, and so it goes that the child becomes the responsibility of those who are near to help it...

MY OPINION...............I look at this way....you want to smoke when you are not prego then thats fine...but when you are prego that baby does not have a choice and as a responsiable adult and soon to be parent, you should want to do whats best for your baby and whats best is to not smoke...If you cannot go without a ciggerette for a while, then you have no business getting prego..when my wife and I were prego, we both quit cold turkey right then....and I was a smoker for a good while....at least 7 years...and I did not start back till about a a lil over a year ago and that was as a result of some personal problems that got me stressin and since I have never been much of a drinker I relapsed....Point is it can be done!

Nearly the same thing with my Dad. He stopped cold turkey when he knew my sister was having his first grandchild. Even though the kid did not live in our home, he didn't want him to be exposed to it at all. Then his brother got killed tragically and he picked it back up again for a bit.

Of course it's selfish.
I'm smoker and I'm planning to quit smoking even before I decide to get pregnant, because quitting when you find out that you're pregnant is not enough... your body is still full of toxins.

What do yall think about women who are pregnant and smoke? Do you think it is selfish?

selfish? yes..smoking can lead to low birth weight and still births

i am a product of a mother who smoked during her pregnancy, i was barely past the premature cut off, born early and only weighed 5lbs but since all my organs were developed i didnt have to be incubated.

however, my mother is a good mother and i wouldnt trade her for anyone

however the drinking and drugs tends to have more negative consequences (ie fetal alcohol syndrome and birth defects)
