that's a tough one... not too long ago it wasn't considered a bad thing, pregnant women smoked all the time, my mom smoked half a pack a day when she was pregnant with me and my 2 older sisters, never caused a problem (well at least nothing too noticeable:D). but since then people have been made more aware of the consequences so there is no excuses and you have to rule out being ignorant. BUT in some cases the stress of quiting cold turkey can be worse for the child than the actual smoking.

so my final thought would be, if you just found out you're pregnant, ease off slowly and safely, try your best to quit without stressing yourself out too much over it. but if you're in the process of trying to get pregnant well then damnit work on quiting before you do.

I think its a horrible thing. If you plan on getting pregnent then you should stop smoking BEFORE you ever get pregnent

It's not just their life. Its the life of their child. Not only that, it is our money that pays the premium for health insurance because of the irresponsible people who inadvertently raise the cost of it by not taking the precautions they should.

I had a friend who found out that she was pregnant and wasn't planning for the baby. She was a smoker and her doctor said that it was in her best interest not to quit, just to cut back (which she did cut back) b/c of the withdraw that the baby can go through.

What do yall think about women who are pregnant and smoke? Do you think it is selfish?

Not only do I think it's selfish, I think it's just plain ignorant.

Last Thursday I had to ride with my brother at work (bah...). We were up in Fremont, Indiana working at this hotel that we're contracted to do.

So we're sitting in the back behind the front desk and this blonde haired chic comes in and sits down. She starts talking to my brother about the how she's 7 1/2 months pregnant and that the spray painting (they're repainting the edge around the hotel pool cause it was chipping) is making her feel sick. I understand that.

A few minutes later after my brother gets back on the phone with the company we're contracted through, this chic is talking to the GM.

"I'm about to go outside for a cigarette cause this spray paint is really getting to me." :dunno

as for the ins you said....it's a very small amt compared to illegal people getting top flight care and cost of crack babies. Alot of these people have ins....I'm not in any way saying it's right.. put a choice that they should make not us there is tons of info for them to make a choice

I agree with Vfast. It's at the discretion of the mother on whether or not she chooses a healthier lifestyle for her unborn child.

In my case, I quit smoking when I became pregnant with the boys because the smell of smoke made me puke...and with the girls, I quit a month before I became pregnant with Liberty, and was still off them when I became pregnant with Darian. I only picked it back up about a year after DJ because I was so stressed with my ex.

And ya know...my boys were healthier than the girls were. *shrugs*

i just beleive the less amount of chemicals you injest during pregnancy the better, i read several articles on it, and some say at least the child is found to be a little more shaky or restless than other kids not exposed.

Haus...did she come out with any health problems due to the fact?

she turned out ok. only thing that i know of is that she has bipolar but i dont think that came from the cigs, drinking, and weed.

her mom did all of this in all 3 of her pregnancys and they all turned out ok. her younger brother has schizophrenia tho but both the bipolar and skitz their dad has so i dont know if its hereditarie(sp)

and her 8 year old little sister seems ok too.

but no birth defects on them.
