Pray for Japan

I saw a comparison shot the other day where Katrina folks were looting, and the Japanese were just standing in line waiting patiently. I do think part of the difference, though, is that people weren't there to open stores in New Orleans. That does make it hard to stand in line, and I wonder what would have happened then.

But the Japanese seem to have things under control as best they can all things considered.

Arent they? and the calmness the Japanese are displaying...no rioting over petrol/food/water....no looting...totally different to the West and how "we" react

Huge cultural difference between Japan & New Orleans. Japan deals with earthquakes constantly and are constantly having preparedness drills. New Orleans people expected someone to fix their situation immediately they were in denial even before it flooded.

The biggest cultural difference must be a prepared government that doesn't abandon it's people lol

I watched a reporter interview a few students right here in the maritimes who have family back in Japan and it was heartbreaking. One teenage boy had tears in his eyes when he talked about his grandmother and how frail she was the last time he saw her.....last I heard he still hadn't spoken to her but it wasn't from lack of trying. So sad. My thoughts and prayers are with them all. xx

Katrina proved one is on their own in a disaster.

As I've spent most of my life down here I know that one must be prepared or you are out of luck.

It always amazes me when I see footage after a hurricane and in those long, long lines for ice & water are expensive cars. If you have the means to afford the payments on those you have the means to stock up on stuff and have a generator sitting in your garage waiting to go outside & be put into use.

My dad didn't raise me to expect the government to save me. That's my job.

If something this huge and tragic were to happen here we're screwed. Cuz I doubt this administration will be any better than the last in any disaster.

Self-reliance.

That said, I heard a Japanese gentleman speaking on the news a few days ago. He was comparing his country to Haiti. Saying you wont see that here. I agree that the Japanese have a much different mind-set.

The Japanese definitely have a totally different mindset, and as someone else already said they have a long history of natural disasters, they are better prepared than most for this sort of thing, they're not a poor third world country either, I'm sure their losses won't be as bad as what we see in a lot of other countries.

I remember when I first saw the footage of videos and even some photos of this devastation.... I thought aloud...

I can't believe this happened to us.

Yes. US. Not just them. These people are us.
