Maybe this will help to know what areas call it what.

Historically, the correct term is 'phosphate', which was defined by soda jerks as being a flavored syrup mixed with carbonated water. 'Soda's were what we today call floats. Therefore Soda is clearly WRONG and pop is more acceptable as a shortening of phosphate.

Hell, I have always used soda...

if you said Pop here in pa people will look at you like your from another planet.

i call it Soda if im talking to some one saying yeah i had a Soda today. but when im at a place to eat ill just say can i have a coke or pepsi.

If I was at a restaurant or store down here and I asked someone if I could please have a pop, they would be like :wtf and give me a look as if they didnt know what I was talking about.

certainly in the pub i work at fizzy water is called soda, but we call everything soft drinks, altho i don't because it just sounds lame.
If it isnt a cola i just use the brand name. wewt 7up.
