Burning The Midnight Oil

Anytime I drive by the Pentagon late at night (as I did last night on my
way home from the CUFI conference), I’m not surprised to see that the
lights are always on. Dedicated Americans are working around the clock, 24
hours a day, to keep our country safe from an enemy sworn to destroy us.

Tonight, these men and women won’t be alone. Across the Potomac River on
Capitol Hill, the Senate will be debating into the wee hours of the morning
in an all night “talk-a-thon” ordered by Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid
in an attempt to force America’s surrender in Iraq.

Reid ordered the talk-a-thon in retaliation for Republican filibusters of
the Democrats’ surrender legislation. But the move appears to have been
coordinated with the radical anti-war group MoveOn.Org, which
coincidentally is hosting more than 150 events across the country tonight
to generate opposition to the war.

Now I realize there is a lot of impatience with the course of the war. But
the president adopted a new strategy and ordered additional reinforcements
to Iraq. The “surge” has just started to take effect at full strength, and
it is showing signs of progress.

The president and our generals have asked Congress to wait until September,
but Senate Democrats appear to be taking their cues not from the commander
in chief or the generals on the ground but from the “blame America first”
crowd. I wonder how many Americans realize that Senate Democrats are
ignoring the advice of the dedicated folks at the Pentagon and acting on
the agenda of the radical anti-war Left.

I feel bad for Nevada, Harry Reid's state.

[FONT=&quot]Nevada is the most dangerous state to live in. It is also number one in suicides, divorce, prostitution, amount of women killed by men, and gambling addictions. They are ranked number three for high school dropouts, poor mental health, and alcohol related deaths. Nevada is number four in bankruptcies. And here is the kicker they are ranked forty seventh in voter turnout. No one should be following this Senators instructions.

So you have a problem with allowing debate in the senate?

It's the republicans that are trying to silence the debate with a filibuster. The democrats are doing nothing more than forcing the debate, getting the senators on record for what they believe. How is that wrong? Don't you think the American people have a right to know where their senators stand on the issues?

I'm actually glad that they are all going on the record. I want to know who to vote for in the next election.

Click any senators' website and you can read all about where they stand on issues. It is no secret.

You're missing the point, the republicans are trying to silence public debate on an amendment that the senate has majority backing on. But since the the minority party doesn't agree with it, they are trying to keep the bill off the floor.

Public debate on an issue is much different that posting your views on your site. You get a much better understanding of a bill when it is debated openly, because if one side or the other spews bullshit, the other side can call them on it. Debate is MUCH better...

The Republicans are not trying to silence public debate. What they are doing is vowing to block the issue from coming to a vote. What Reid proposed to do (debating all night) is baloney. Keeping everyone there all night isn't going to change anything. The majority of Republicans do not agree with pulling out the troops. The majority of Democrats are in favor of it. It is as simple as that. And so they are going at each other's heads, nothing new here.
