Plastic People

This article is producing mass hysteria for people that don't understand chemistry.

If toxins were entering the bloodstream through tupperware containers, they'd find it in the bloodstream w/o having to inject it into the blood stream.

Urban Legends Reference Pages: Microwaving Plastic Releases Cancer-Causing Agents

Grace, dear. I personally know.....For a fact that Benzene can be, and is being ingested into the bloodstream by microwaving plastic containers.

The article I posted actually makes it sound as if it is not really an issue at all.

and to me, just because it is called an urban legend doesn't make it one;)

And I have a rather firm grasp on chemistry....One could say:)

I know.

This is why I was asking you to explain further.

... MEN!

Ugh!

as you know i know bugger all about science(thank goodness weve got BB to put it into easy terms) but i avoid plastics for eco reasons which have resulted in avoiding a lot of things like this.
i do know that last year the plastic wrappings used in cheese and high fat products was changed here for this reason.

I know.

Ugh!

I did Grace.

Number 1 offender BENZENE, it is a component used as a base feedstock for the manufacture of Styrene.

And although it is not considered a Dioxin, it is on the very top of the list of KNOWN carcinogens.

FACT:

Cambell's sought the assistance of a coatings company due to the alarming amount of benzene that was being introduced into the "Soup At Hand" contents.

And no, I will not divulge how I know this....But I do;)

That is one case. And no, harder plastics are not really in that much danger. BUT, most mircowaveable meals, are in containers that are made with a base material of:

Styrenes and/or Poly Ethlyenes. Which will not introduce "plastic" into the bloodstream, just the Benzene, and various and asundry vinyl chlorides that are contained in the container.

^ That was the type of response I was looking for earlier.

I know chemistry, but I have not taken as many classes as you in this area. This is why I was asking you to explain more.

I understand what you were driving at. I mean, the article in the O/P does not really insinuate that there is that big of an issue. When in fact there is, they could have done a much better job of conveying it.

And I understand that was your point:)

You know, trying to communicate (much less being understood) with a male is difficult enough , without having to add the Internet/written language to it w/o emotions, body language, etc. ---- posting becomes it's own little branch of science in itself. :D :24:

Glad you understood my point, as this whole time I thought you didn't and that was not helping me in my responses to you. I'm tired now. LOL!

Ahem, please try to stay on topic. This is an on topic section:D

There is no real evidence that ingesting any form of plastic will cause you any harm. During manufacture, or moulding of the containers, some plastics do release chemicals, mainly gases that can be extremely toxic (mainly Polyvinyl Chlorides - PVC's) but once the plastic has cooled, it is ok.

There has been suggestions down through the years that heating plastic in a microwave may release some of those toxins, but this has never been proved & there has been a lot of research done.

While I wouldn't recommend it, most forms of plastic (all of those that we come into contact with daily, anyway) can be consumed quite safely as the human body is incapable of breaking it down.

There is plenty of scaremongering & I would say that if this bothers you then stay away from plastic, but the reality is that there are people out there who think that Peanut Butter causes cancer, that you eat 8 spiders during your lifetime, that it takes 7 years for the body to break down chewing gum... etc

Go back and read some of what I posted on this subject. What I posted I know first hand.

The validity of the article....Who knows for certain. To me, some get bound on the hysteric issue and pay little attention to the scientific facts involved.

I do know, for an un-adulterated fact, that there are issues with some conatiners leaching chemicals into food. Not all of them, that would be like saying that guns kill everyone, when in fact they just killed that guy over there.

The article is broad brush, but it has validity.

If you know for a fact that certain containers leak chemicals into food upon heating, please tell me which containers they are so that I can avoid them.

Spanks!
