This seems really novice and I admit, I am... But do you use the B&W feature on your camera or use a program to desaturate your photos? I just found the feature the other day by accident. I'm not sure if my settings are messed up but they all came out washed out.

I would use Color than you could use a program like GIMP ( free software that is like Photoshop ) you can convert a photo to Grayscale ( B&W ).

That way you have both versions of the picture you have taken and never no regrets of not having taken it in color as well..

I imagine it's one of those situational calls; it all depends on the circumstances of your scene and camera. No definite answer.

I take everything in colour, and then change it later. Like Francis mentioned, if you've got both then you're never left regretting not doing one or the other.

I also like to play with contrasts and exposures which I'm sure you can do with the camera but I'm still a newb :)

To be honest, even if I knew how to do every little trick I probably wouldn't :) most of the time I'd rather take the picture and edit it later, than fiddle around trying to get the right settings. Especially if you're with other people, or in a situation where the scenery is changing as you watch.
