Dianne Arbus - did freaks in a cool way back in the day.
Lee Miller - this is a pic of her in hitler's tub. symbolizes a lot of things.
Sally Mann - some say she is way twisted, but if you watch a film about her, you get it
Those are all film - no digital. And those are some I thought of in three seconds. If you want more unique people that some in your class won't choose, but it may be harder to do a report on, let me know.
believe it or not,young tildy had to do this on her favourite photographer........she chose me,e-mails bounced back and forth

He is very famous though and that's what the op is looking for. He dis take great pictures but is a tad over rated imo.
!!!!over rated!!!! have you seen one of his prints in person!He's like a pioneer/no one will EVER be able to do with he did with his depth of field and tonal ranges!!!

He wasn't " like " a pioneer... he was a pioneer. There are many photographers over time that if you put their pic side by each to lots of his stuff you wouldn't know the difference. Lots of times it's all in the name Janie O'babe.

I was a film guy... slides actually because they were better reproductive wise than film, when you were still a sparkle in your daddy's eye.
I disagree about his stuff being indistinguishable.
I have seen his prints up close and in person. They are beautiful. I think I even cried a little.

i went to the Diane Arbus exhibition. i wasn't all that impressed. i get the whole controversy for her time. but the actual photography in parts was not great.

Actually thats a point. what field do you want your photographer to work in? what are you interested in?
fashion, portrait, journalism?
if you want a great story of his life and what not Eugene Smith would be a great choice. you can talk about war and then when he got injured and the iconic first picture he took when he recovered.

Sally did stoke up a lot of controversy with her photos of her family.
And that is the main reason I respect him as a photographer. His shots as beautiful as they are would be secondary to me.
Looking at that pic does make one think many things. To me it's quite dramatic.

Pft AND the ones of the body farm and now the ones of her husband...and her dead dogs...chick has some issues - but she is wonderful!
