http://www.zroorz.com/allabout.php?query=ItIt's patronizing and offensive to use such a familiar term on a stranger. Especially someone older than you. One of the things they emphasized when I was in management training class is how inappropriate it is to use these little names on customers. "Dearie" "Sweetie" "Hun" They're all just as condescending. Rule of thumb: If you don't know the personm call them sir or ma'am or some other term that indicates even a modicum of respect.

This is my professional opinion... but my personal opinion is slightly more relaxed. I have to be very careful with the customers I deal with. I can't risk being unprofessional and losing my company millions of dollars in contracts. So useing terms like hun, sweetie or dear are out of the question, I need to be respectful and seen as professional. Some of my customers are very down to earth and talk to me very bluntly, but that was their call, not mine.

How can pet names and terms of endearment offend anybody!?!?!?! If anything it should do the complete opposite, I'm always flattered when addressed that way.

Good post. But I have to point out that she's ringing up a 50 cent cup of coffee, not a multi million dollar deal.

Some people were just raised in certain ways and kept that tradition going in their core values. When someone has a slightly different and well meaning value they use to address others, they might take offense to it.

You can say that the person needs to chill out, but It's just how they were taught. Fifty years ago, you never heard the term "Whats up". Now it's just all too common. Times change, but some people don't.

I wouldn't worry about it myself Silent.

Exactly, some customers may take offense to it, but you don't know which customers will. So while it's ok to talk to regulars like that, it may not be to another customer you don't know.

I'm not saying she was wrong, it's just that I just see where her boss is coming from. Wheather she is ringing up a cup of coffee or selling a boeing 777, she is still a representitive of her company. You have to act in the companies best interest and represent them accordingly. When you work in any job that has customer service, you have to treat all customers the same.

Once again, I don't think she was wrong... but I also see the other side and wanted to share that.

Yep, I definitely see your side of it. I had to maintain my composure with this old hag today. But I know that a lot of people are the type that say I don't care how the phone works, as long as it works.

I was doing a lot of biting of my tongue today. Mainly because this lady's son just bought another phone system from us.
