Permits to harass?

These guys keep coming around say they have permits, even though our complex says residents only... there's even a sign on the building.

They're from a company, and when I threatened to call the cops (the guy wouldn't let us close the door last week and all but called me a bitch) he said they had permits.

Anyone know how that works?

Ask them to show you the permit.

Most permits for door to door salesmen are purchased at the city level but even if they have one of those that doesn't give them permission to harass you. If you tell 'em to vamoose and they try and force their way in call the cops while they are standing there. They'll take off I guarantee you.

I saw them on the third floor about five minutes later. I can't get through to the complex now, or to their company, because it's after hours. I'm on hold with their 1-800 right now, and I'm going to climb the chain. I'm pissed. It's bull. They've knocked on my door I don't even know how many times at this point.

I was trying to find the complex security people, because I was afraid if I called the cops they'd have permits that would have made it okay and then I'd have wasted the cops' time. :( What should I look for on the permit?

Okay, well, I finally got through. She pulled me up through my electric account (I guess since they sell the energy to them?) but she opted me out, so they shouldn't come around anymore. Next time they do though, I'm telling them I'm opted out, and when they push, I'm taking Daddy's advice: I don't owe you any answers, have a good evening, and then gently shut the door. And if it continues then I'll push the matter further.

But for now... we should be good.

If they have a permit, then they can go door to door.. HOWEVER, if your front office say NO soliciting.. Then they CAN NOT come to your door. Call the front office and ask them if they have given these people permission to do this. If they have NOT, call the 911 center and tell them that these people are harrassing you and you would like them to receive a criminal trespass warning for your property. Once they are warned, they will be arrested the next time they come to your door.

They deregulated energy in our area and if we opt to go with them, right now energy would be 5% cheaper than through our current company, who buys energy from the people going door to door. It's not worth the hassle for me to save maybe $4 a month, though. And I'm especially not doing it after how they've acted. But I think that's why they're so persistent- why would someone say no? Um... because I don't want to get locked into a contract at x rate only to have my current company lower their rates and me being paying more. Besides, how do I know you won't be charging me more fees?

And when I tried to tell him soliciting isn't allowed: "Well, technically, the definition of soliciting..." Honestly, dude, I don't give a flying flip what the definition is technically. I showed you the no trespassing sign. Go the eff away.

I'll have to call the office, V. Or walk down there so they can't blow me off.

i agree with you,the way prices fluctuate you'll probably end up spending about the same amount over a year anyway

call enbridge and tell them, tell them that he entered your unit illegally (putting your foot indside the door to prevent it from closing might be an old salesmans trick but it is illegal to enter with permission ( is called tresspass)) make sure you tell enbridge this

Hmmm, see, when I'm at home, I'm in MY zone, in my tranquil zone, my private zone, and if I don't want to continue to talk, I will not. Had a salesman tried to hold my door open, I would forcibly remove him, as is my right (at least in my state). I don't deal with that. Same with phone people, insisting they have something I need to hear. That's easy enough though, cuz you can just hang up. Don't deal with that. Talk to the front office, the cops, and I'd go so far as to call and talk to the dude's boss and tell THEM what a douche the guy was being.

Matt shut the door on him while he was in the process of calling me a bitch, just not in quite so many words. I couldn't be rude enough to shut the door on someone's face.

Although... I think I may have after threatening to call the cops on the guys the other night.

They were funny though- I was on the phone with my dad, outside, and they could see me from upstairs, and they got all antsy like until they realized I was on for too long or heard me or something.
