There was an interesting discussion about this on another forum I post on and I thought I'd bring it here to hear some of your guy's thoughts, I'm sure most of us have family members or have dealt with people at some point who are mentally ill, anyone want to share any interesting experiences?

There was this severely demented old woman that my mom watched after for a while, she would sit around making faces all day, she would regularly go to the bathroom on herself, and when she would use the toilet she didn't use toilet paper. On more than one occasion we found Human Feces or puddles of urine on our kitchen floor, and she would deny being responsible for it. She would go into random fits of laughter that would go on for like 10 or more minutes at a time.

She kept a journal of the most insane shit I've ever read, she would write about my Aunt like she was her aunt, my mom like she was her mom, and she referred to my brother as "it". She could also be heard talking to herself when she thinks she can't be heard, I actually heard her talking about killing people before. On top of all this she was also a heavy drinker.

One time she fell down outside and came into the house DRENCHED in blood with a big flap of skin hanging off her forehead, you could actually see her skull, she just walked in and sat down in her chair like nothing had happen, we aked her if she was ok and she's just like "I'm fine" and goes about watching TV, we had to call an ambulance and she ended up with like 50 stitches.

Another time She was sitting there watching TV and I looked and noticed that one of her fingers had turned totally BLACK and swelled up to about 3 times it's regular size, we asked what happened and she was just like "I don't know" and wanted to just go about her day like her fucking finger wasn't about to fall off, again we have to call an ambulance for her, apparently she'd been bitten by some venomous spider and didn't tell us about it. After this second incidenct I finally convinced my mom that this old hag was a danger to herself and everyone around her, and to find someone else to take care of her.

Well I know someone with Multiple Personality Disorder (they call it Dissociative Identity Disorder now) who's younger personalities would take over and go clothes shopping. That person would wake up on some mornings and find different size new clothes in her closet with absolutely no memory of the shopping trips. That's a hell of a metal illness to have!

lol, that's great...

I think that there is nothing wrong with being mental... until you ruin life for other people. >=)

OOPS MY BAD.

I actually had to deal with mentally handicapped people at school, I was a tutor for them when it came to the English classes. Like, i was the literature person, cause I sucked at math.
I found it rather interesting to get to know some of them, and I feel bad for many of them, cause they can't do what most of us can...

Either way, I don't mind Mentally Handicapped people, just... some of them are a bit "CREEPY"... YA KNOW?

the Conservatives introduced an initiative in the UK called "care in the community", the idea being to reintegrate mental patients into the local community. Of course, the govt just wanted to save money and cut taxes for the rich.

Where I grew up we had one of the UKs largest mental hospitals nearby. Most of it was shut down under the care in the community programme. I remember seeing this lad, was only about 16 or 17, stood on Kingston train station, crying, screaming, so frightened and not knowing what to do with himself. It was horrific and very upsetting. He'd obviously been let out and was completely incapable to dealing with the outside world. Poor kid.

A friend of my family was in a mental ward for a while too. Not entirely sure what her particular problem was, but I used to go and visit her and take her to the local pub for lunch. The ward she was in was a horrible place, and she actually got worse being in there. Eventually she was let out. The poor lady killed herself some months later.

i have no direct experience other than siblings who have in th epast dealt with mild depression and have taken meds on and off over the years to deal wiht it

safe to say though two things ring true

some people need help 24-7, read dkrtws story and secondly, govts need to step up and provide it, read Eds post about the UK govt failing in this regard

I have plenty of experience of it, some too hard to talk about. The biggest problem is society in general treating all mentally ill people like they are about to stab you at any moment and like criminals. No understanding or sympathy, just shun them.

That reminds me, when I was in the 4th and 5th grade a buddy of mine's little brother was severely mentally ill as well, could barely speak and just generally had no idea what was going one, we thought he was weird and didn't like him, but we were just little kids ourselves back then, looking now I feel bad for the kid, I hope things have turned out alright for him.

I know just what you mean about them being Shunned, I'll admit I'm glad to be rid of that lady but I do still think about her sometimes, I hope wherever she's ended up she's doing well, I hope she's been put in a nursing home with a dementia ward, that'd be the best thing for her.

So do I Peter and the way that some people have no understanding or sympathy is unreal. Not all mentally ill people are violent in any way but get treated like they are. And the system for the Mentally Ill really sucks! They dope you up so that you can't even hold a conversation and expect you to live a fulfilling life.

I've got personal issues with mentally ill. Wait are we talking retardation? It makes me uncomfortable to be around them for very long. But you'd have to know me on that personal level to really know why.

Well, I wouldn't feel that way around all mentally ill people based off a bad experience, obviously someone like the lady in my story is highly uncomfortable to be around, but then there are those who don't behave in disturbing or disgusting ways and are just kinda out there, they can actually be highly entertaining.

My mom kinda lost it after her mother passed away. I saw her swallow a bunch of pills when I was 13, trying to kill herself. Had to get her stomach pumped. She got mad at me a few times when I was teenager. A lot of it's hard to talk about. She was admitted to a mental hospital two or three different times between when I was 13 and when I was 16. After her and my dad split, she flipped for some reason and locked herself in the bathroom with a knife threatening to kill herself. My dad and I went over to try and talk her down. Ended with my mom trying to choke me for some reason, probably thought I liked my dad's girlfriend better than her, and my dad having to shove her to the ground to get her off of me. Wasn't fun. She's pretty unstable, even when she's on her meds. She thinks my brothers and I don't care about her, she has pretty bad bipolar disorder. She's become pretty reliant on her pills. I think she takes like 10-15 different TYPES of medication on a daily basis to deal with her issues.

Lucky me, I got the genes passed on. Fortunately, I started dealing with the issues before they got to the point that my mom's were at. Killer anxiety, bipolar, and depression. But I feel I've got a much better grip on my life than she does (at least for now..lol). I think the difference is that I have a knowledge of what my mom's done and how it's affected her children, and I want to do everything I can to prevent my daughter from having to deal with that.

my aunt has DS. they told my grandmaw she probably wouldnt live past 14. she'll be 47 wednesday! she was in the Special Olympics and my grandparents traveled EVERYWHERE for it with her!! People with DS hold a special place in my heart!

she has the mind of a 7-10 yr old.

i dont have the mental, physical and emotional energy to care for people with disabilities such as DS and mental illnesses but i have the utmost respect for the people who do!! my grandparents being one of them!! it truely takes a special person to do such job!
