Playback 101 - Playback - Yahoo! Games

“You said, ‘I just don’t have anything in my life more important,’” Dr. Phil reminds Teresa. “You said, ‘Being with family just isn’t a priority.’”

“What do you think about what she just said?” Dr. Phil asks Jennifer.

“I feel like she doesn’t care enough to make us a priority,” she responds.

Dr. Phil points out the extremes Teresa has gone to so she doesn’t have to share the PC with her family. “She unplugged the router, so you would think the Internet had gone down, and as soon as you went away, she plugged it back in and went back to tending her crops,” he tells Jennifer.

“Part of the reason is because of her attitude when I do ask to get on the computer,” Teresa begins.

“No, it’s not,” Dr. Phil interrupts. “You unplugged it because you have a ridiculous addiction to a ridiculous computer game that’s interfering with your ability to be a mother. You needed a fix, and she wouldn’t get off, so you had to create the opportunity.”

Dr. Phil says that people don’t break habits; they replace an unwanted behavior with a new behavior. “Close your accounts. Get out of Farmville,” he instructs Teresa. “Reintroduce yourself to your family. Cook a meal. Go on a date. Go to a movie. Go jog. Go sit out in the backyard and watch the grass grow. Do something. Actually, maybe start a garden for real.”

I don't play many games for that very reason. I try to have a real life (outside of here of course).

The GeekCrack that is WoW has brought too many people down.

The GeekCrack that is Farmville has brought too many people down

I play solitaire. No GeekCrack there.......... Who'd spend all day and all night, foregoing all other things, to play that????

I'm online more than I should be and would NEVER play an online game for hours on end. I'd rather work on some sort of website project.

I used to play both World of Warcraft and Farmville. They're addictive because they both follow the same formula. The player does something repeatedly and gets a prize for it. In WoW, if you fight lots of monsters and do quests, you get to move up a level and acquire new items. In Farmville, if you successfully harvest your crops, then you are rewarded with new objects and plants. It's merely a continuous cycle.

It seems similar to a mouse pushing a lever and getting some food.

As I mentioned before, I played those games and felt myself being "sucked in". It never got tremendously bad, but I recognized that I was becoming a bit too occupied with them. Especially when it came to WoW, I started giving it more priority than I should have been. When I recognized it, I canceled the subscription. That may sound drastic, but I didn't feel like falling into the trap of gaming addiction.
