First of all, you have my utmost respect for having served as a U.S. Marine. I've talked to those who've gone through basic training, and the fact that you have made it through THAT shows you are a cut above the rest.Indeed I was. I can say first hand Marines can be absolute assholes and are the best in the world at it.
And why would you be shocked? Know what shocks me? Blind allegiance to any country or organization within a country. You think our military is flawless? I could write a book on fraud, waste, abuse and crime in what I saw whlie I was in the Marine Corps. Add in the rest of the military and you could write volumes. The military is a microcosim of society - everything you see in society at large - murder, rape et al happens in the military.
I do agree that there is enormous waste, fraud, and crime associated with our country's defense on numerous levels. But you gotta remember that any time you have an organization that consists of millions of people from all walks of life, there are going to be numerous problems with the subjects you've mentioned. That's the price you pay for having the most successful and dominant military machine in the history of the world. People can bitch about the U.S. all they want, but the vast majority of the countries today would not be where they are had it not been for us.
K. I can address the eco-problems later, if you want, but that has nothing to do with the military. We are fucking up this planet big time. Do you not think it in our best interest to take care of this little orb we inhabit? Do you think we can continue to pollute it with impunity?
