We'll know more after we get the autopsy results back. The colt was born Thursday morning. My boss said that Splash was very lethargic and uninterested in things after that. It took her around half an hour to get up after the delivery. The vets did an ultrasound and didn't see anything and she seemed to perk up as the day went on. I was told to keep an extra eye on her that night and she seemed fine. She was eating and the foal was nursing OK. Then I was off for the weekend and when I came in for my shift Sunday night the colt was on a nurse mare and I was told that Splash had been sent to the vet college Friday afternoon. When I came in last night my boss said that Splash was no more. The surgeon had told them that she probably wouldn't survive surgery and even if she did she would not survive the recovery so the decision was made to put her down.

It sucks. She was a nice mare and this was her first foal.
