:( What happened!?!
We'll know more after we get the autopsy results back. The colt was born Thursday morning. My boss said that Splash was very lethargic and uninterested in things after that. It took her around half an hour to get up after the delivery. The vets did an ultrasound and didn't see anything and she seemed to perk up as the day went on. I was told to keep an extra eye on her that night and she seemed fine. She was eating and the foal was nursing OK. Then I was off for the weekend and when I came in for my shift Sunday night the colt was on a nurse mare and I was told that Splash had been sent to the vet college Friday afternoon. When I came in last night my boss said that Splash was no more. The surgeon had told them that she probably wouldn't survive surgery and even if she did she would not survive the recovery so the decision was made to put her down. :( It sucks. She was a nice mare and this was her first foal.

:( That's so sad.

So, they discovered that Splash had a small tear in her uterus. They had done two ultrasounds plus an endoscopic exam while she was still alive and didn't see it. It's too bad because if they had caught it the day that she foaled they could have repaired it and we might have saved her. As it was, by the time they put her down she had a lot of fibrous tissue growing around her intestines already and it was too late.

RIP Splash.

Poor Splash. Maybe they should name the colt 'Splash of Luck' or 'Lucky Splash' in her honor?

I might have to write that down. :thumbup Someone suggested Splash of Ambition. That's kind of cool. Golden Ambition was another. My suggestion was Ambitious Golden Boy. :D Everyone will give their suggestions and then they usually end up naming it something entirely different. :p

just read this

that is sad:(
Thanks. :) As luck would have it, a farm across town had a mare that lost her foal recently so we were able to borrow her as a nurse mare. We still have to hand feed the colt a bit to supplement him until her milk starts coming better but at least he still has a momma. :)

Yes they do. It's not common but it's not rare either. Some maiden mares will reject their foal initially but if you take it slow and get her used to the idea, a lot of the time they'll be fine. It's actually rather remarkable that the mare we got for the colt accepted him as easily as she did. Most mares will not tolerate a strange foal. I think temperment has a lot to do with it.
