We had a big snowfall Sunday thru Monday here. I didn't work Monday. So I didn't have to hit the roads until early this morning. 6:15 a.m. to be precise.
I went out to my car and sat in it while it warmed up a bit before heading to work. The roads were totally awful still! Icy and slick. I actually rode behind a snowplow truck who was scraping and salting the really bad spots.
I managed to do about 35-40 mph most of the way once I was no longer behind the snowplow truck. He went straight and I had to turn.
Anywho..... It took twice as long to get to work. I always drive carefully and don't let the jerk behind me who is tailgating determine my speed.
I was taking my lunch break when I heard the news.
Less than one mile from my home..... around 1:00 a.m...... this morning..... a 19 year old young woman lost her life on the highway I drive every single day. She somehow went over the middle line and hit a truck head on. She was dead at the scene. The other driver was taken to the hospital and is going to be okay.
I sat there and thought about her. I don't know her name....yet. But I imagine that the roads were really treacherous at that time.... since the snowplow truck was just barely getting the roads safe enough for my trip in on that same road. I wondered why she was out that late. I wondered how on earth her mom and dad and family was ever going to handle that news. I wondered why any job is so important that I too risk my life in bad weather on bad roads to get there at times. If only things could be postponed until the sun comes up.
On the way home.... the sun was shining. It was cold. But the damn roads were clear! Clear dammit!!!!!!!!! That young woman should not have lost her life like this.
