OMG! Baby squirrel abuse...

Sure they are cute to watch. Its nice people feed them too until someone get bitten by one.
Anyone ever have rabies shots ? They are not a hoot, they are not fun.
Not saying run out and kill all squirrels but they have their space and I try to stay out of it.
A case of rabies in a squirrel is extremely rare. The reason for that is quite simple. Any animal that had rabies and attacked a squirrel would no doubt be bigger than the squirrel and would eat it.

"
Squirrels are almost never found to have rabies. And squirrels have not been known to cause rabies in humans within the United States. Bites from a squirrel are not normally considered a risk for rabies. Most small rodents and lagomorphs rarely develop rabies; however, woodchucks accounted for 86 percent of rabies cases among rodents reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 1985 through 1994. Your stats maybe correct but I was bitten by a small squirrel. I don't know if that squirrel was rabid or not but I had to shots just in case.
Not fun at all. And why would anyone take a chance that the squirrel they are trying to get to feed out of their hand is not rabid ?
I feed squirrels too. I leave peanuts out all the time but away from my doorways and windows.

What a BRAVE man:rolleyes:

Why? Are your squirrels maneaters, and he was protecting himself and the children? Were the kids in danger?

Genuine questions, ARE they vicious and dangerous? I wouldnt have a clue:dunno

Because the pepper spray didn't do permanent harm to it. And after they were able to get it to a place more suitable for it to be instead of chasing kids around.

ahhh...I didnt see where it was terrorising the kids....no wonder they were all asking the cop NOT to spray it.

According to school officials, the baby squirrel -- which looks to be about the size of a hamster -- was chasing after some students.

The school deemed this a threat, and called animal control.

Talley said after several unsuccessful attempts to scare the squirrel away, the officer used his pepper spray on it to protect the welfare of the students.

And if the school didn't call it in and a student got a little bite then all the parents would be bitching because nothing was done.

So in the end no major harm was done and this squirrel is back in the wild where it should be. And frankly I'm still laughing that so many have made it into such an issue. Atleast he didn't whip out his pistol and blow the little guys head off.

And OF COURSE kids are going to find a baby squirrel cute and not want it to get hurt. But I guess we should always listen to kids because they know what's best right? :24:

Didnt say that did I;), but yes, actually, sometimes they display more common sense and empathy than some "adults":)

I still think the pepper spray was overkill, and Im entitled to:D

Why was the guy even there? What harm can a squirrel do? A baby even.
Apparently they can terrorize little children, which btw were yelling in the background not to spray him so I don't know how scared they could have been. Good thing it's not a taz job we're talking about here. The cop was a fucking idiot.

Squirrels aren't a problem here in the states, they will keep their distance. They fear humans and you typically can't get close unless you feed them on a regular basis and they get use to you.
If you watch the video, the squirrel keeps advancing towards the cop. That isn't typical of squirrel behavior. And you need to also realize that there are quite a few cases of rabies here in the states. Sure, there were only 2 confirmed cases of squirrels having rabies in 2009 (latest stats from the CDC) but most people don't know that squirrels are fairly safe. And when an animal has rabies they no longer have fear of predators, exactly like the squirrel was acting... later stages they will go complete nuts and chew and bite everything in sight...

So with all that, with the children behind the cop, the squirrel coming closer and closer without fearing the cop (He attempted to scare it away earlier) he took the least lethal way and gave a very short burst of pepper spray...
What if he did nothing and it bit him or a child?

He did the right thing and people are just blowing it out of proportion.

Exactly!

So it was a RABID squirrell....I didnt see that in the video.:)

We dont have rabies here, so can only go off what I know about "dangerous" animal control in my own country, and it doesnt include the use of pepper sprays/mace.:) (thank goodness)
