Of course it was illegal under British law, the only reason it stood is because the USA won and as we all know, history is written by the victors. Any decleration of independance if not approved by the country the're breaking away from is illegal. Laws are very rarely changed without someone standing up against them and breaking them. The whole thing is all rather silly now, anyway, it happened, there's no official animosity between the two countries any more over it so fighting it out now is pointless.
