My knees are KILLING me!

They started hurting over a week ago. After a few days, and crying out when I tried to stand or sit, I finally went to the doctor's office. They took x-rays (don't think they saw anything, 'cause she never called) and wrote me a Rx for ibuprofen. Sometimes that helps, sometimes it doesn't. I'm about to have to go back though. I actually got stuck on the toilet the other day. It hurt so bad I couldn't get up. I needed someone to lift me off. I cried trying to stand up that same day. Had to crawl on the floor and pull myself up on the couch and hoist myself up. And that was with the ibuprofen in my system. :(

I don't remember hitting them on anything, icing them doesn't help, heat doesn't help, straight doesn't help, bent doesn't help.

Has anyone else had this happen before?

Nope but Hotty I'd follow up on this, you shouldn't have to suffer this way, maybe it's not something shown on the X-ray but somethings happening. I'm sorry. Hugs!

I had it happen last year, thought i had pulled a muscle. (the pain was in the thigh)so I went to see my wife's holistic healer (massage) and it still was persistent after an hour and a half massage. turns out it was my body dealing with stress...doctor also did some pictures too (my family has a knee problem as well)

She said follow up after the New Year. :( Everything I have read online says knee pain for longer than 48 hours = doctor's visit. I just know I am doing permanent damage.

I've been massaging a little bit around my knees and sometimes I'll hit a really tender spot.

I still understand why she gave me the ibuprofen though. She checked my knees (yep, BOTH hurt like hell- I'd say 8 out of 10 almost constantly) and said there was no infection or heat or inflammation, but to take the ibuprofen for inflammation? The earliest I can get in with my primary is the 12th and I just cannot wait that long, but I did not like this lady. Her assistant said she likes puzzles and figuring out what's wrong but she spent less than a minute with me. :(

Drink plenty of water. Ibuprofen may help some. Try some very gentle stretching. Are you knees locking or jus hurting? Have you done anything strenuous that would affect your knees?

I've had that same thing happened to me before especially during winter months back in Chicago. I have history of rheumatoid arthritis in my family though and i just pre-diagnosed myself as that as my grandma who has it goes on same pain bouts during cold days. Round the clock Ibuprofen works for me due to it's anti- inflammatory effect/pain relief.

I don't experience it anymore after moving to warmer climate ;) Maybe you just need to always keep your knees/legs warm every time. Wear socks and warm pants especially this winter season. You may also try rubbing some analgesic creams e.g Bengay etc. I know they have that strong mentholy stench but some come with NO stench at all. If the pain persists of course, you have to go back to your MD for further evaluation. Hope you feel better soon 816cb5e50d2deaddlr0.gif

three family members of mine have gone under the knife and the pain is still there (rainy days are the worst) I am being proactive about the knee pain to the point if it hurts after three days I will get it checked. but all the advice about the water and keeping yourself warm does sound like sage advice.

Do you drink? Eat rich food?

The reason I ask is that it sounds quite similar to my first attack of gout, though that was in my feet. The pain was excruciating and nothing helped except a huge does of Ibuprofen (what mg do you guys have over there? I seem to remember it being 200mg Ibuprofen? If so, take 6 tablets.), like around 1200mg.

Then I had to change my diet and drinking habits.

Just FYI: Ibuprofen has analgesic/pain relieving and anti-inflammatory properties unlike Tylenol. If there's no clicking or like a dislodged joint/tendon when u hit the tender spot, then maybe you're not causing any permanent damage. But when u feel like your knees are locking and feel something out of place on your joints area esp when you're ambulating, then go see a doctor right away. Besides going to your MD if you cant get a sooner appointment, you can also go to an Urgent care which is less busy compared to an ER.

I tried stretching. It helps while I do it. The big problem with that is my knees feel tighter in the front and I can't stretch far enough to really feel it. I'd have to flip my feet in front of my hips. They haven't locked; one of them used to when we took the camper out, but that's been years. It just hurts. I can't think of anything I've done. That's what so frustrating!

I've thought about it the cold doing it, especially since I can feel the winter in my ankle (sprain a few years back), but even when I first wake up and I've been all toasty in bed, it's excruciating. I may run out to Walmart tonight when hubby gets home and look at creams, or ask when I make an appt. Definitely going back to the doc's.

I tried a bag of frozen raspberries- bad bad idea. I got so stiff. :( I thought I was drinking plenty of water, but maybe not.

I have killed a 6 pack and maybe one drink out in town since Thanksgiving. Not a big drinker. My ibuprofens are 600mg and I'm doing three a day.

Goodness only knows what's been going into my body. I've been eating out a lot more often. Thankfully, we're back to eating at home, so maybe that will help. Although, it did start before I started eating out...

I don't know how our insurance works with all that. :(

Sometimes it clicks and sometimes it doesn't. It does kind of feel like a bumpy thing under there, and I can wiggle it around a little bit, just to the outside of my knee, and it hurts, like I can almost see stars, when I move it. But she barely touched my knee! I thought maybe it would go away, but now I'm thinking she was pushing me through the door. I was actually out of her office before my appt time even officially started!

It almost looks like there little bruises on my knees now too, but I can't tell if it's that, or if they are old scars/discolored spots that I'm only really noticing now.

Those sage advise are the most basic things one can do at a certain circumstance when one is still at a lost for info as to what's gong on ;) There are a lot of medical disorders related to knee pain and further evaluation/assessments needs to be done b4 one is advised to go for surgery right away, imho

Go to another doc, she must have someone to call in case of ER, being in that much pain is ER. Call her office and see who is covering for her. Do so and report back here...those are your orders!

ok cool well I normally take two 600mg every 4 hours until the attack has completely gone. Don't worry, you can't OD on Ibuprofen at those levels. Mind you, I'm 190lb...

Things that trigger gout are rich foods; beans, red meats, red wine. Your liver stops coping with it and spills out Uric Aric into your joints. This being there on it's own isn't a problem, it becomes a problem when the level fluctuates and gets to high, then crystals are formed which literally jab the crap out of you from the inside. Very, very painful, no impact needed. It's a temporary form of arthritis I believe.

If that fits the bill, drink lots of water, steer clear of red meat, beans, anything too heavy and keep taking the Ibuprofen.

You can call the 1800 # on your insurance card and ask :)

That bumpy thing where you may have the pain might be the internal inflammation. When you use heat pack, concentrate on that area and see how it goes. Rest is mostly what you need to do and to prevent further damage just in case, minimize ambulation as much as you can.

As with your Ibuprofen, are you taking it round the clock? I mean just take it 3x per day with or without the pain OR even if you had been relieved or not so you have it your system every time preventing your pain level to go higher. You can actually alternate it with Tylenol- don't take it same time though- like in between doses. This of course are just temporary help till you get seen by an MD. :)

Am sorry to hear your MD didnt do a thorough assessment. Touching of course is not the only assessment tool there is. She would have seen a discoloration on your skin or a bruise if it was due to an injury or trauma of some sort. She can also visibly see swelling. So maybe when she touched it and there was no gross inflammation, then all she can do is the basic stuffs plus Xrays. If the pain is excruciating and it continues, you just really need to go see an MD right away :)

btw- the discoloration/bruising you might be seeing now is maybe an after effect from your massaging or cold/hot packs on your knees esp if you're very fair skinned and sensitive- just still continue to monitor it though....

You should check into this. A friend of mine (girl) has the exact same thing you are describing. Out of no where she will get an attack and can barely be able to walk for a couple of days.
Talk to your doctor about it possibly being gout... you might be surprised.

Kind of scary, but I'll have to ask about it I guess :(
