I have a Gateway MT 6458 and it has a Marvell TopDog wireless n controller.
I have swapped in a 30 gig drive and am downloading Ubuntu 9.04 as we speak via bittorrent @ around 500kbs so I am going to give Linux another whirl. I also dug up a netgear WG511t wireless card and will try getting drivers for that if I still cant get the Marvell one.
I really only use the laptop for Net surfing and piddly stuff. If I need horsepower I use my desktop.

Fuck Vista.

must be a hardware problem, as i have had only one issue with bsod on vista b x64... and it was a simple resolution (yes, i bitched about it here, but when there's a system glitch, who does not bitch??).

i just have to make sure i don't install any 'application compatibility' updates, as no doubt there are somethings microsoft just does not want you to be able to run these days...

I think it's a corrupted hard drive.
My spare drive is about halfway done installing Ubuntu.
So far so good.

I have disliked Vista from day 1 so Linux is free and if I can get the wireless driver sorted then all is well.
If not I will try other options.

i agree it's not the brightest crayon in the box.

This thing boots in 1/4 the time it took with Vista.
Pulls .avi and mpg2 video from my server no lag.
Havent tried H264 encoded stuff yet.
Network connection is solid.

i have reformatted so many times in the two years i have had my vaio

and last time i reformatted i let the people at lsu do it for me bc it was in the middle of finals and i needed my laptop to take law school exams

well they wiped over my original vaio version of vista so now my drivers are fucked and don't match

and sony tells me they no longer make a back up CD for my latop

but i can get one similar to it for $40 even though I paid $700 for the four year even if a nuclear holocaust came down upon us warranty.

i just want stuff to work. i am not even fancy with my technilogic. i don't even store more than one gig worth of stuff on my laptop at a time.

my brother said win 7 sux and he went back to xp, but let me know if it works out for you

Well, if that's the case and the $40 gets you a nice shiny, newer, faster laptop - seems like it's worth the bargain.

What kind of things do you use it for? If it's like Poopa, then perhaps linux is your thing. Even office stuff can be fine with things like OpenOffice.

As for Win 7, in my humble opinion - it's faster for sure and a touch more stable than Vista but is still more of a memory hog than XP. XP is still a touch quicker in some respects however and slightly less of a memory hog.

Aah, see what you mean- on reading again, I can see you meant the CD. Codrus is right though, more often than not - these things can be found online even if sometimes it's a pain. With some things too, sometimes the XP drivers will work for Vista/Win 7 if you can't find Vista/Win 7 drivers (if you go down that route). if you realy look and find the origianl manufacturer of the motherboard you can make it non-proprietary, which can leave you more open to other software

I just setup Sagetv on this thing.
Now I can watch recordings,live tv, and all the movies from my server.
It just keeps getting better.
