A few years ago, when my daughter was a preschooler, her pet cat died. She talked it all through with her mother, and they decided that it should be buried in a favourite spot under the apple tree. Her mother then decided that she would distract the kids by taking them to the cinema while I did the deed.

If you've ever tried digging anywhere near a mature apple tree, you'll know that the roots go everywhere. After a few attempts to put the spade through the turf, I concluded that it wasn't practical. I scraped off a patch of grass, made a cartoon style mound of dirt from the vege garden, and knocked up a neat little cross.
