PBBB and her OotM team are set to compete in the Regional competition this Saturday :clap Her team won Regional last year :clap and made it to State but didn't place high enough to go to World. :( But, they were beat by high-schoolers. So, not too bad for middle school! :thumbup

I wonder what this year will bring? WooHoo!!!!!!

She's pretty excited :cool

Using their minds as a team trumps tearing their bodies up w/organized sports any day.

We're really proud of her and her team for all the hard work they've done this year.

I'm thankful to StickBoy & Roxi for discouraging her and us about getting into organized sports. As both of them were in them and regret the damage they've done to their bodies.

Much better to be on a team that uses their minds collectively. Everything they've done has had no adult-input.

It's all them! :cheerleader::cheerleader::cheerleader:
The little Brainiacs. :cool I think they enjoy that they get recognition at school that trumps the athletes & cheerleaders :p

It's good to know my kid is smarter than me. As it should be!:cool

Go kids go! Break a leg!

p.s. While I'm bragging on my brat, did I update from her getting into the Duke University TIPS program? She did indeed take the ACT a couple of months ago and we got her results in. She (in 7th grade) did better than 50% of the high schoolers that took the test on the national average. Not too bad kid. Not too bad. *beams again w/pride*

Smart kid. I wanted my kids to be wel rounded so i encouraged them in athletics as well as mental accuity. They both earned academic scholarships. we did Odyssey of the mind and other academic challenges. Both of ours started tacking ACT as 7th or 8th graders so when they were old enough for it to count they were not intimidated. Congrats on her acheivements.

Thanks Fred :)

She was freaking on the practice book. There was stuff she hadn't learned yet on it regarding math & science. But we went through it and she learned some valuable lessons on how to read a question, figure out what they want, look at what they give you and deciding on your answer instead of just being intimidated by the whole process.

I hate tests. ;)

Poor kid was eating stress for breakfast this morning :24:

She just got home a little bit ago from a teammates house doing some last minute prep on their props. Now that she's been fed & watered ;) she's working on the styrofoam cow that's in their skit. Then she needs to get in the shower and get in bed and try to sleep cuz she's gotta get up around 5:30 cuz we have to be there at 7am. Hopefully she can fall asleep and not stress all night long on stage fright. :willy_nilly:

Yep, Odyssey of the Mind is the full name of the competition. It involves a number of problems & skits that each participating school team gets then said teams come together and perform those skits to be judged whose was the best. Originality, creativity, etc....

It's fun. It's challenging and it helps them to learn to think on their feet and problem solve. and eat stress for breakfast.... Welcome to the real world kids. ;)

Well, her team didn't make it to states. :( They missed it by a few points.... She's pretty bummed. But a couple of teams from her class made it. She may go as a helper or her teacher may assimilate her team into the winning teams. We'll see.

As an aside, I volunteered to help serve food for a couple of hours yesterday and realized I have an aptitude for running a concession stand:24: Who knew?

Perhaps I should invest in a hot dog cart? Tho, this OldeButt won't be selling em in a t-back. :ninja

I had a girlfriend who had a cart that did just that. She made piles of money. On days it was cold and she wore clothes? Not so many sales. Go figure.;)

Win or lose, all teams put in a great effort.

as long as she had fun thats all that matters!

Which she did. They all did. :cool

Bikini weiner wagons always do well. LOL!

Glad your daughter got the experience of Odyssey.

Us too. 2nd year in a row. Tho, her teacher may be leaving the school next year. We're not sure if they'll be getting another gifted teacher in? Hopefully they do and hopefully he/she is as awesome a teacher as the one they have now.

Yeah Fred, they do do well... :ninja:cool

My daughter had awesome instructors when she was in the gifted program. It was a real gifted program.
When my son came along there had been a lawsuit concerning the gifted program not being diverse enough. They diluted the program by allowing points for things having nothing to do with being gifted. All of the good gifted teachers left and toward the end of his time in the gifted program it was a glorified babysitting day.
