These numbers all come from a brand-new Louis Harris poll, inspired in part by my new book Wingnuts. It demonstrates the cost of the campaign of fear and hate that has been pumped up in the service of hyper-partisanship over the past 15 months. We are playing with dynamite by demonizing our president and dividing the United States in the process. What might be good for ratings is bad for the country.
The poll, which surveyed 2,230 people right at the height of the health-care reform debate, also clearly shows that education is a barrier to extremism. Respondents without a college education are vastly more likely to believe such claims, while Americans with college degrees or better are less easily duped. It's a reminder of what the 19th-century educator Horace Mann once too-loftily said: "Ignorance breeds monsters to fill up the vacancies of the soul that are unoccupied by the verities of knowledge."

Yet a close reading of the Bible reveals an interesting discrepancy: According to Scripture, the Antichrist will try to deceive the public by claiming to work on God's behalf. He will be a so-called wolf in sheep's clothing, a duplicitious man of God pretending to do God's work while instead furthering his own diabolical agenda.
This is puzzling, since President Obama has never implicitly nor explicitly claimed to God's work. Though he has invoked God and religion on occasion, his presidency has been fairly secular. (Those people who believe that Obama is both a Muslim and the Antichrist have some confused and contradictory theology.)
George W. Bush, on the other hand, repeatedly invoked God during his presidency. He was quoted in The Faith of George W. Bush as saying "I've heard the call. I believe God wants me to run for President." Bush also said, "The biblical prophecies are being fulfilled. This confrontation is willed by God who wants this conflict to erase his people's enemies before a new age begins," and that "I trust God speaks through me. Without that, I couldn't do my job."
Of course George W. Bush is no more the Antichrist than Barack Obama. Yet if what the Bible says about the Antichrist is true, Bush is a far more likely candidate by any objective measure.
For the majority of Americans who are pretty sure that President Obama is neither a Muslim nor the Antichrist, it's easy to mock such outlandish beliefs. But beliefs have consequences; last week, nine self-proclaimed paramilitary "Christian warriors" were arrested in Michigan. They had been preparing for a battle with the government—and, ultimately, perhaps the Antichrist.

There were some pretty outrageous claims against Bush too. I do not remember a President who ever seemed to make a majority happy while he was in office.

I wonder what the breakdown percentage wise was between Republican, Democrat & Independent. That would give you a fourth line that might show the whole nation is a little loopy not just the republicans.

I have heard a lot of things about Obama from some fairly radical thinkers. I believe he is a socialist and I do not believe he is a Christian. There were some pretty outrageous claims against Bush too. I do not remember a President who ever seemed to make a majority happy while he was in office.

He's not a socialist... if you made him leader of any socialist country, he would be considered right wing by their standards. So how exactly does that make him a socialist?
For those who truly believe that he is a socialist, you need to brush up on your definition of socialism and what it really means.

And I would love to hear what makes you think that he is not a Christian.

As a Socialist myself, I find any assertion made by individuals regarding Obama a Socialist as absolutely ridiculous.

I suggest people who think he is a Socialist look up the term on Google or Wikipedia. There is no excuse for such blatant ignorance in the information age.

Let me make this a little clearer...

If Obama was a socialist, he would have never passed this health reform law.
He would want ALL the doctors, nurses, health care providers, hospitals, etc as employees of the federal government. They would be paid with tax dollars and told what they will be paid. American's would ONLY be able to see government doctors and would ONLY be able to get government run care. That is what socialized medicine is. Socialized health care does not have private insurance, there is no need for it.
Now Europe has socialized health care, but they also allow for private providers and insurance. So it isn't 100% socialized health care.

I have friends who are doctors. They tell me they are already told what they can charge through the programs the government already has. They are dreading what the future holds for them. Not like Medicaid & Medicare are shining symbols of what we want.

Your taxes PAY for the schools and the teachers... that's why they are called public schools.

You would rather private schools that can teach anything they want, meaning no national standard of any sort?
