Tim I am not against public education. But I do find fault with the feds getting into it.

Why should any money toward education come from DC?

It should never have left the local area to begin with.

Or at least the state. I imagine Detroit is an anomaly for me to say it should stay totally local. But then Detroit is so fucked up it goes beyond saying.

It is just not this. The state and local govt put strings on giving money. The damn money should never leave the local to begin with. The system is ass backward.
It's extortion - illegal anywhere I've been.
Really? You want to go down this road that the government has no business in public education...
The Constitution is clear on the matter. "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

You want a nationalized education system? Fine. Amend the Constitution.

Dunno what Warts are, but it's good to see you.

Are we gonna have another education discussion?

My take on Ed:

Keep the Feds out, leave it to the State to decide education mandates then leave it up to the individual school boards to carry out those mandates and add in any particualar specialties that the local school board wants- the mandates should be simple and should be based on real education of core subjects- not extraneous courses that focus on government indoctrination/social programing, social programing should be left to the parents.

Money with strings never does anything but gum up the works.

Our school system lacks great creativity because of all the strings in the past.

Ive never run a school in my life- but Im a businessman and a former NCO- I can do anything with nothing and do it better than anyone else.

I can take any failing school in the USA, half its budget and produce kids better educated (and a darn sight more respectable) than what they are now in one year. So long as the feds keep thier strings to themselves and I get a handfull of men who are wlling to roll up thier sleeves and get down to some serious volunteer work.

The schools dont need more money necessarily, they need leadership at the local level and for a champion to step forth in each school and cast off those government strings.

With out parental involvement nothing will help schools.

It is amazing how you can go from my house which is in a nice neighborhood with A+ schools and drive 10 miles south to what are without a doubt the worst schools in the country in Detroit.

yes there is money going to schools.

the smart schools will treat it as if it was not there as far as the future is concerned. It is a band aid to cover what is horrible waste in schools.

and it will have strings attached.

Unlike the initial Bush Bank bailouts with absolutely no strings attached. Strings can be good if they promote the proper behavior and results.

The strings I speak of will have nothing to do with providing better education. The strings will be requiring further spending. All the current hand out does is to stall the inevitable where schools have to start being smart when it comes to spending. There is too much waste. The benefits teachers get is no different from the auto union and can not be sustained. The NEA is one of the few remaining behemoth unions. They bullied their way for ages and good for them but those benefits can not be sustained. Our school district is privatizing the busing and next up sometime this month will be food service and grounds. My wife will lose her job. But that is ok because the current system is flawed and the spending has to be reined in.

I wish you guys would spend as much (any) time begrudging the fat cats their over the top salaries and selfish ways as you do the unions.

The bailout itself was improper behavior, as is federal interference in states' education systems. Improper behavior cannot beget proper behavior. At best, it will appear proper in the short term then fall apart. A good example would be screaming at a child for making too much noise.

I have not really defending absurd wages for the fat cats. I do not think they should be regulated but the board of directors should be better stewards.

As to the teach unions and benefits they are not sustainable. That does not mean I find no fault with the administration end of things. I would rather see each school be its own entity. Way too much overhead.

The top cats earned their way to those positions. Unions simply bully their way into higher salaries, whether they deserve them or not.
