North Carolina and Gay Marriage

When I can get divorced and get healthcare for my kid and myself at a reasonable rate (if not free) there is no "Sanctity of Marriage" outside of the political distraction effect.

It's good to know bigotry is still alive and well in the 21st Century in plenty of our States.

It just really blows my mind how much power a book has over the lives of people, whether or not they agree with the things it says or not. The right can say this is a diversion from the real issues and dodge discussing their bigotry but this is a real issue, like it or not. I'm not even so worried about the marriage labeling aspect as the lack of protection rights under the law and the clear sanctioning on non-biblically approved relationships and lifestyle choices.

Running off of the popular vote can be a real bitch sometimes. That's the double edge sword of our country.

Given time, I have no doubt that the Supreme Court will override the "will of the people" on this subject.

Change takes time.

I recently watched a fascinating documentary on PBS pertaining to the "Freedom riders" during the civil rights movement in the 60's. You want to talk about a lot of anger and not much understanding?

Slowly but surely, I believe we're getting a better understanding of ourselves. Sooner or later we'll get there.

If by civil union you mean common law marriage, NC did not recognize that either prior to A1. Though IMO it would have been more equitable to recognize that rather than to make it an amendment to disallow that and gay marriage (which it already didn't allow by state law), other than a handful of counties that voted against (mostly in the Triangle area) A1 passed. You are talking about a state that has historically been red; Obama was the first Dem since Carter to win NC.

Civil unions and common law marriage are two completely different things.

Yes, civil unions were recognizes in NC. There are 10's of thousands of current civil unions in NC and only about 10% of them are same sex couples. The other 90% were civil unions with a man and a woman. Even these will no longer be recognized in NC now because of amendment one. These couples will no longer have a lot of the same privileges that married couples have, like visiting their partners in the hospital, being on their partners benefits, tax benefits, etc. This list is actually quite extensive

This will all go away because of amendment one...
