Isn't it difficult to make money if you don't have a major TV contract in the US and multiple southern teams are losing money faster than the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico?

the major network deal was NBC and Versus. ESPN (I do not know if TSN carries games) wants to get back into the fold, but we will never ever see justice in this league until Butt-head is gone.

Yeah, in the early rounds CBC gets first choice of games with Canadian teams and TSN shows the others. I think one has the West and one has the East in the conference finals. CBC will show the Cup final. In the US I think it would be ideal for ESPN to get back to showing games. From what I've heard the TV deal that the NHL currently has with Versus not very good.

Speaking to representatives from ESPN at the winter classic (Barry Melrose and Steve Levy) they all want to see hockey back for sure, but will an audience follow? Yes, Versus does suck, but they are claiming stake on the the game until their contract ends. but it all depends on the audience, and looking at the rating of the winter classic this year, other than in Boston and Philly, no one market made a dent in the ratings...

That's why none of the major networks (NBC, ABC, CBS, etc) are interested in showing hockey and it gets stuck on Versus. I blame Bettman's poor league management for a lot of it. With apologies to retro and anathelia, southern expansion should have never happened.

but it was enviable, the league wanted to get a new audience and they are paying the price now. imagine if the Sharks do win the Cup? that would be awful...

Well, Carolina and Tampa Bay have already won it so it's already tainted. I am ashamed that the first southern team to win the Cup came at the expense of the Flames. :( And the second one came at the expense of the Oilers. GAH!!! USELESS ALBERTA TEAMS!!! :willy_nilly:

You know, I don't think I've ever met ANYONE who thinks Bettman is doing a competent job running the NHL. Why, for the love of all things round, do the owners keep renewing his contract????? :willy_nilly: Does he have compromising photos of them or something???

Easy to see why the owners love Buttman..

He is their puppet master and sucks up to everyone of them to stay Commisioner.. He has kept his job by keeping his lips on each owners a$$ .. Pathetic as that may sound it is exactly what has happened for all those years he has been in the position.. :D

What can anyone tell me that HE ( Buttman ) has accomplished on hiw own ? :ninja

Flock all.. :24: In fact hockey was much better prior to his arrival.. Nowe we have stupid OT extra points for LOSING teams and rules that make players play like they can't touch others while others take dives all the time.. :thumbdown

Actually, I've been hearing rumblings that there's a possibility they might move the Coyotes back to Winnipeg. :eek

Yup, I've heard the same and if not them then another new team if need be.

In any case it looks like Winnipeg will end up with a team but I saw Bettman on Tv talking about it at one game and he could barely stop making fun of Winnipeg in trying to downplay the team problems HE created in Phoenix He tried to ask how could someone justify moving a team back to Winnipeg when they could not support them the last time around, so why give them a chance again.. They reporter asked him what difference it made as Phoenix NEVER supported the Coyotes so how could they justify them staying there and Bettman ran off like a little schoolgirl.. A$$hole..

The last thing the NHL needs is a new team. The talent pool is diluted enough as it is.

 A few of us had a fabulous time discussing the finer points of Bettman's stupidity. :D

You still going to watch the playoffs now that the Bruins are done?

yeah, I watched the Blackhawks win today, still not really interested in the Eastern conference

I came home from church, turned it to TSN and promptly fell asleep. I woke up again just after the game had ended. :D
was focusing on two players on the Sharks, Joe Thornton (to see if his play has differed since leaving Boston, and he still thinks his tough in front of the net) and Rob Blake (he was on the Avalanche when they won in 2001 and was paired with Ray Bourque and he was showing his age on some of the play)
