Newb question on gifs...

How do you copy/save a gif file that you find on a website - like an avatar with movement/animation in it - and then use it elsewhere or get it to work on your compu?

I figured out how to get smilies to work by using {img]http://www.offtopic/insert image here.gif[/img}, and that leaves the gif being hosted by another site, but if I want to save it to my compu and then post or use it elsewhere, then I lose the animation/movement.

What am I doing wrong and what should I be doing?
 
i just right click on them and hit save image as just like you would do to a regular image. but if you went to host it at a site they would know it was a .gif file and then still put the
tags around it
 
I still can't get it to work as an avatar. I can't put the "img" brackets around it. it has to end with the .gif extension.

Also, when I save the .gif, it does not show the animation. When I tried to post it, I got the big red x.

See, I can post it here in a post, but can't do it without the img around it so can't put it in an avatar. And no, I don't want this guys avatar, but it is a good example.

I think I figured it out. I was trying to load a larger gif than the site allowed for an avatar. So I was doing everything right....except that....
 
ok i think you just need to upload it from your computer. so go into your profile and at the bottom where it says to pick an avitar you can upload the GIF file from your computer to show up as your avitar. let me know if this works for ya

If you need the gif file resized to work as an avitar, send it to me or post it up. I will resize it for you so you can use it as an avitar. :D

Thanks man. What prgram do you use to resize? How do you resize a gif?

You know the whole give a man a fish vs teaching him to fish blah blah blah thing.....
 
I use Adobe Photoshop, but you have to open the gif and resize it using the ImageReady side of the program. If you open the gif and resize it using the PhotoShop side, you will lose the animation and it will save as a pic. Hope this helps.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I don't have PShop. I thought that might be what you were using. I never have used PShop much either.

If I find an avatar that I must have and it is the wrong size, then I will run it by you.
