Is anyone able to recommend a nice but reasonably priced hotel/holiday apartment/whatever in a reasonable area of New York?

My boyfriend and I are thinking about visiting in July this year, but accommodation is damn expensive!

Thanks in advance :D

The one time I went, we stayed in a hotel next to a church of Scientology. I can't remember the name, I'll see if I can find it out :) it was nice and I don't think it was over the top either.

I am not sure if you guys are open to the idea to stay at a hotel in New Jersey which is just a train and a bus away anyway from NY. It was something that we did b4....It's a lot cheaper.

Some of the hotels in NJ too have tour buses that go to NY tourist spots or drop tourists off @ Manhattan at scheduled times.

I stayed at the Park Central Hotel in Manhattan. It was nice, but I don't recall the rates. I think about $150 a night, which isn't terrible considering it's Manhattan.

Thanks for the advice guys! I'll look into all of them, and yeah $100-$150 a night is probably around the price range we are looking at.

hahaha PJ, where do you live? Miles from NY?

1) try also some rooms/vacation homes for rent that are about 15- 20 mins away from Manhattan. They offer a week's stay for a cheaper price.
2) Extended stay America has a weeks' stay for less than $100 per day.
3) some Motel 6 nowadays also have upgraded/remodeled rooms that has hardwood floors, flat screen TV and very well decorated rooms below $80/night. You just have to call them for locations.

Save some money for some NY shopping ;)

be careful where you choose

We stayed at the St. James which is a couple blocks from Time Square. It was the cheapest i could find back then. They claim to have made upgrades so it may not be as cheap. If it is the same do not expect any amenities. Just a tiny room with a bed.

The other time we stayed at a really nice place on the upper west side. Lots of restaurants around. I believe it was The Lucerne. Very nice place

Are you driving or flying in. Expect to pay a premium to get a room on Manhattan.

We just booked a night at the Hampton on Time Square for $119 per night. It's a 3 star, I think.

Wow if that is within a few blocks then prices have really gone down. Anything other than the St. James that close was over $300 before.

We got the deal through hotels.com. ;) I know when we stayed at the EconoLodge on Times Square it was $200 per night. The rooms were literally so small that you could walk past the end of the bed and would often run into someone's feet hanging off the bed. Literally barely 2 feet of total space outside the beds, LMFAO

This is the other thing I'm not really sure what the good areas of New York are. I thought staying near time square would be a good place but from this comment, I'm guessing not?

We will be flying in

Just stay in Manhattan, below Hell's Kitchen and you'll be fine. I'm guessing that's where all the tourists go. :D

Close to Times Square is fine. Just expect to pay a bit more for a hotel is all. First time I went I did not care about the room. As I knew we would rarely be in it.

Is this your first trip the NYC?

Yep :D and like you, we will not be in the room very much but I still want a decent, clean, safe place. There are a lot of options out there so I'm sure we will find something
