As the howling winds blew (it sounded like a damn truck!) down the stack, it shot smoke out of the dampers that run along the top front of the woodburner. Who'd a known that could happen?

To make it even more fun, there is no way to close the damn area. So, as I opened up all the windows and turned on the exhaust fans in the house, my hubby used his welding gloves to block the area where the smoke puffed out. I put the dog outside on her lead. I put the cat in my bedroom and closed the door to prevent more smoke getting in there.

Then my hubby said we needed to get the fire going good in order to stop the wind from doing that! I was like, what? Let's just put the damn thing out. Too many hot coals. If we put it out now, with that wind doing what it was doing, it would only be worse. So he built a fire.... and within minutes it stopped the wind from doing that. He said something about a hot fire and drafts and windflow and whatever.

So... I closed up the house. It was never this smoky. We've had smoke escape before as you put wood in, but not like this!
I hate the high winds for another reason now.

Believe it or not, the smoke detector did work, but only after I investigated the smoke. Then it only went off for a minute or two and shut off. By then, I was opening all the windows and doors and had 3 exhaust fans going.

I can taste nothing but smoke even now. My coffee barely helped. I did drink a bottle of water during the whole ordeal.

Fresh air! Get outside, eventhough it's cold, and take in some deep breaths to help clear the muck out. Drink cold water to help clear your throat.

What a scary way to wake up!

Hey, Goldie. I was outside off and on. I knew better than to stand there and inhale too much. And I did grab water, cause I was already coughing from the cold I have.

To top it off, the hubby has COPD! He almost coughed up a lung during the whole damn ordeal.

Since the fire has been going pretty good, it hasn't happened again.

If it isn't one thing around here, it's another. We're just trying to save money because the cost of propane to heat the house is killing us. Damn those high prices and the high winds.

I'm okay, Ryder. Just can't quite get the damn taste of smoke outta my mouth is all.

I'm on a mission to get that pup in everyone's sig here! Want to join?
