So much dell bashing in this thread. I own 5 Dells, and have never had a problem with any of them. (Yes, I have a lot of computers).
Don't buy a netbook. They're nice for doing one thing at a time, but if you want to do something like listen to music, surf the web, and instant message at the same time, it's going to be laggy. I recently got a netbook from ASUS and while it's good for checking email, and the occassional skype call, I still have to depend on another computer to do all my heavy lifting.
As always, when buying a computer, if doing so online check out the various coupon sites to see if there aren't any extra discounts you can get.
Since you don't do any intense graphics or gaming, you don't really need a whole lot of high end hardware. Since you don't really download much, you don't need a lot of storage. You can probably get by with one of the laptops that are generally considered in the "budget" or "everyday" category. Whatever you buy you're probably going to wind up with Vista installed by the OEM, so you're going to need minimum 2GB of memory. Whatever you buy make sure it comes with a free upgrade to Windows 7, which is set to be released in October.
