I'm coming into a bit of money in the next month or two and I'm planning on getting a new laptop as I'm getting fed up with this shitty computer and even more importantly, getting fed up with sharing it with the missus who clogs it up with shit and having to share time on it with her. Going to have about 300 - 350 quid to spend on it. Anyone got some good advice as to what to buy? All I really want it for is using the internet for forums like this, listening to the radio and watching and streaming films, programs and sport, I require very little in the way of downloading stuff, just want the internet to run as fast as possible for what I can afford. Cheers! :thumbup

I would get a Dell netbook. They are inexpensive and have a good warranty on them.
Pros = portability, lightweight, cheap
Cons = External optical drive bought seperately

I think 350 quid comes out to about 500 dollars and it will be hard to find even a entry level laptop at that price after tax and shipping.

My advice is NOT to get a Dell. I have (pardon me, had) one...and it sucked all kinds of arse. Not to mention Dell's service is complete shite.

I've been looking at a decent little Lenovo for about $400 US. 2 mg memory minimim is the key. Expandable up to 4. And it's a dual-core Pentium.

research the fuck out of it. When I bought my laptop I found a three page blog about it and even watched a video of a guy taking it out the box it came in and setting it up and using it and reviewing it as he used it.

Go to sites like Newegg.com - not sure if that is applicable outside the us - where you can shop for VERY specific specifications like processor, video card

OH! And a really neat thing I wanted on mine but didn't get was a front loading DVD drive - like you have in a car - where the tray doesn't pop out...

Dell is a shit computer and they don't back their products. In fact the ex-governor of my state is suing them right now for failure to honor guarantee.
