for my brothers line of work. He is a carpenter and I spent three days working with him. We had to get a basement ready for a new cement floor (this included getting the old floor cleaned and rather spotless, then laying down some floor fasteners and some mesh wiring) the next day we had the easiest of the three, we watched the cement dudes pour and spread the concrete and we left early. Yesterday was the worst day because it was wrap up day. We had to first prepare a landing on the roof above a stairwell and clean up all the work areas as if we didn't work there at all. My brother had been working there for over a month in doing small jobs and the like. Didn't help that the weather was humid. Didn't help that tools and scrap metal, wood, nails were scattered throughout the yard. But it was a good lesson on what he has been doing for work for the better part of thirty years.....

well its not that, for me I never saw his finished work, I only helped him on days when he was still working at some sites, this was the end results i saw.
found a lot about our similarities and where we differ....and his work is quite nice...I'd hire him!

I think this country is going to run out of people who know how to fix and build stuff.
My brother is teaching his son (he's 24) his trade...so there is hope yet..but if he chooses not to...that craft and its prices are sure to go up!

It's apparently not sexy to young folks to work in 100 degree heat to fix a broken HVAC system, frame houses, pull wire and install receptacles, et al.
I see an awful lot of grey beards in my continuing education classes. Everybody can't be the IT guy working in the temperature and humidity controlled server room. Somebody has to be able to service that condensing unit that sits outside on the ground.

I see a few younger guys with promise. I see quite a few more 'grey beards' out there as well, after the crash.

Kinda sad really.
Most craftsmen don't measure their craftsmanship today by the same standard as it was even 20 years ago but the buyers standards and demands have gone up ?????? I build countertops and some of the crap I have to put up with by both the consumer and fellow workers standards is miles apart.
What ticks me off about it is seeing illegals come in and driving the living wage down because they'll work for cheap. What really pisses me off about it is that I end up going behind them and fixing shit they've built half assed.
Why is it so hard for an employer to see that paying guys little for even less knowledge is more costly in the long run? Why not hire those that know and pay them the decent wage they deserve and end up with more money at the end because of time and materials saved...
