What's the difference? I wasn't sure if this went here or Entertainment(It pertains to movies), so if it needs to be moved, mods, please do so :)

I know that Rated R is "Nobody under the age of 17 admitted", but why is NC17 worse than Rated R? Every time I've ever heard of a graphic horror movie getting cut by the MPAA, the first cut is always slapped with an NC17, and most movie theaters refuse to release NC17 movies. So what's the big difference between the two ratings?

NC17 is rated under Rated R.

NC17 is for cursing, like Robin Williams standup comedy, cursing, etc.

Rated R is for nudity, cursing, sexual nature, etc.

Well see, I guess that's what's confusing me. Here's a better example. The original cut of SAW IV was unrated, but when they submitted it to the MPAA, they flipped out, and slapped it with an NC17, saying it was way too graphic. So then the director says he's going for an R rating now. If NC17 is under R, how is it also worse? :confused Bah, damn MPAA and their rating systems!

NC-17 means no child allowed PERIOD. Rated R means a child under 17 can attend as long as they are with someone over 18. Big difference here guys, and when you have a child, you'll understand and appreciate the ratings systems, even if they are flawed a bit.

For real? That's completely ass backwards... not what I would call flawed "a bit".

NC-17 shouldn't be so extreme though. It's really up to the person seeing it if they think they can handle it. I mean, I've seen some pretty fucked up movies. I don't think there are many more movies out there that can truely disturb me. The last movie I saw, in which I considered getting up and walking out, was The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. I was shocked that they got away with showing the bodies being gutted with a chainsaw :eek

I'm confused on why you think this is backwards?

Rated R means restricted...(as in it has restrictions)

Rated NC-17 means No Child under 17...

Right, but I was under the impression of

NC17 - 17+ only, unless accompanied by an adult.

R - No one under 17 period.

But, as I said, it's actually backwards from what I thought.

The MPAA introduced the NC-17 (No Children Under 17 Admitted) rating on September 27, 1990, to finally make an official and standardized classification that could allow adult oriented films to be distributed with the MPAA seal. Part of this calculation was that the adult XXX markets tended to have no reason to pay the fee to submit their product by that point (since the films were distributed either through independent theaters or simply direct to video), and a differentiation could therefore be inferred by viewers that MPAA rated NC-17 films were intended for adult audiences and not necessarily "obscene" or "pornographic", which would be the decision of the courts.

Well that clears it ALL up for me. Thanks Venom.
