SAN DIEGO - An Illinois teenager whose appendix ruptured at sea, hundreds of miles from help, got safely to shore Tuesday after an unusual rescue in which the Navy airlifted her from a cruise ship for emergency surgery.

Laura Montero, 14, of Albion, Ill., fell ill aboard the Dawn Princess cruise ship off the coast of Baja California. The Bahamian-registered ship sent out a distress call Friday that was answered by the USS Ronald Reagan, which was on training maneuvers about 500 miles away.

Did you guys see the ships operating costs? Yowza! At $2.5 million a day, will this go down in history as the most expensive emergency appendectomy ever?

when I broke my leg I had the operation done in a civilian hospital....when they transfered me to a navy hospital they were like we are going to give you motrin...I'm like I just broke my fucking femur less than a week ago you're going to give me what....motrin....I think I'm going to need something a lil stronger for the pain

bwhaha Chris. They did the same thing for me when I rolled my ankle pretty bad. Those corpsman.

I went to an Air Force doc in MOS school, all I had to do was say my back hurt and I had a bottle of Percs. Life was gooooooooooood.
