SAN DIEGO - An Illinois teenager whose appendix ruptured at sea, hundreds of miles from help, got safely to shore Tuesday after an unusual rescue in which the Navy airlifted her from a cruise ship for emergency surgery.

Laura Montero, 14, of Albion, Ill., fell ill aboard the Dawn Princess cruise ship off the coast of Baja California. The Bahamian-registered ship sent out a distress call Friday that was answered by the USS Ronald Reagan, which was on training maneuvers about 500 miles away.

The most exciting thing that I did when I was active duty. My ship went to do recovery work, off the coast of New York. For the Flight 800 plane that went down in the ocean. I think it was in 97.

I got carried in to medical by two guys when I sprained my ankle. First thing they asked was if I was hydrated. I was like: ":eek :wtf_anim::urstupid::blowme:"

when I broke my leg I had the operation done in a civilian hospital....when they transfered me to a navy hospital they were like we are going to give you motrin...I'm like I just broke my fucking femur less than a week ago you're going to give me what....motrin....I think I'm going to need something a lil stronger for the pain

I went to an Air Force doc in MOS school, all I had to do was say my back hurt and I had a bottle of Percs. Life was gooooooooooood.

I saw this news report today on CNN. Pretty sweet, I'm sure riding in the med evac chopper was a little scary, but also neato burrito!!!!

Bet that 14 year old will grow up and join the Navy!
