Great cause as 6 Dec marks one of the darkest moments in Canadian History

December 6th was declared by Canada's Parliament as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women following the murder of 14 women at L'Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal on this day in 1989. Remembering this horrific event has become the basis of recognizing and supporting action against widespread violence committed against women in our society.

My question is the choice of the rose as a symbol to do this, specifically the selling of rose's to raise fuinds for locals women's shelters - raise funds by all means but I associate Roses with Love and Romance - what do you think, especially the females on the forum....?

Roses have so many associations.

To me, I think it does work as a symbol. It's a budding rose, not in bloom, so to me it would symbolise life (the rose has not reached it's full beauty and potential). The lives lost were cut short too soon (I followed another link from the website you posted to try and find out more about the events leading up to it. It described the women as young) and never got the chance to bloom. The red colour could be associated with love (and that could work as they are against violence so peace/love is the opposite) or it could be because red is the colour of blood and representing blood shed due to violence.

I agree it's a great cause.

I can see your point, indeed. I think the sleekness of the stem sort of makes it sexy, which is weird, but I really agree with Abcinthia's assessment about the bud... And I think a pink or white rose isn't as powerful an image than red.

Very sad
