Nail tips and application

Hello. I'm a beginner and I want to learn to do gel nails on my own. I choose to use nail tips in the natural shade, but I don't know if the white on my natural nail will show through. Do I have to cut my natural, white nail tip off before a pplying the natural shade nail tip? Please, teach me? I want to learn.
