As many of you know, I have been having problems with my overactive thyroid and I have seen a specialist about it a couple of times. He (the dr) wants to eventually kill my thyroid with a radioactive iodine pill but he wants to get my thyroid under control first. He says my bloodwork for my thyroid came back way off the charts because my TSH and T4 free levels were so high last time I was there. He had put me on Tapazole (which is an anti thyroid drug to calm your thyroid down) and he put me on Toprol (which is a beta blocker because my heart races all the time with my thyroid being so overactive). I have been taking those 2 medicines for about 2 wks now. So I went back again yesterday for more bloodwork and he says that if my labs come back this time still high that he will have to put me on steroids for about a month. I have no idea how steroid are suppose to help an overactive thryoid. He says that as soon as my labs came back and if they were good, he wouldnt call me. But if they came back high again, he would call me and tell me he will be putting me on the steroids.
Well, when I got back home yesterday afternoon there was a message on my answering machine from the nurse saying that she called me in a RX and that I needed to start taking it like yesterday. She didnt tell me what it was in the message but I knew. I just had a hunch.
Im sure you are wondering what point Im getting at by now, huh? I was told that if I ended up having to take the steroids for a month that I will have to start checking my blood sugar. Im like WTF! Why? I dont have diabetes. He says because the steroids does something (I cant remember) to your blood sugar. So, I had to get a glucommader and have to prick my freakin finger a couple times a day and check it. And I have to keep a log of it and take it back to him next Fri Nov 3. GOD! It seems like 1 thing leads to another!
