Today was going to be just another normal day...I had breakfast and ran into a friend from home, we chatted and caught up.

I get to work and hear from another friend that the nephew of the friend I was just chatting with was stabbed last night....23 years old, he was out with a friend and saw a guy and girl get in a fight. He went to help the girl and the guy stabbed him.

He was airlifted to the closest hospital and died a few hours ago. His poor parents, who are also friends of ours, had to get a flight from the east coast to Calgary...which is about a 6 hour experience...they didn't make it in time to see their boy...their only boy alive one last time. I can't imagine their pain, my heart just breaks for them.

Life sucks at the moment....THAT just doesn't make any sense.

He sounds like he was a good kid if he tried to go to the aid of this woman. Shame he paid for it w/ his life. *smh* This world we live in...sometimes it just makes you want to cry.

Although I am saddened by your loss and the loss of a good and.decent person, I find.comfort and.solace in the fact that he no.longer has to deal with earthly sufferings. Pay your respects ,enjoy the time you have with your loved ones .the world.as a whole and all its.inner workings as well as.the why's will never be.rational or fully understood...but life.goes.on as do.we....be glad.for the time.you had and look back fondly upon the memories you have...its.never easy to lose.somone but usually when one is.taken from our lives another is.added ...look forward to making.new memories and.cherish the ones you have :)

My condolences as well.

I agree Cod, I really do but I can feel a small fraction of the pain this poor boy's parents are feeling right now...their baby ripped from their lives. Yes, he was a grown man, but he was still their baby...how do you comfort that...how do you tell them his time was done? Their hopes and dreams for him stolen.

They raised him to be a good and decent man...to help when needed and it killed him. Where's the lesson in that? Life is all about learning...what do we learn from that? Turn a blind eye when you see someone being beaten? Don't help anyone for fear of your own safety? Some cowardly bastard that was beating his girlfriend and ended up murdering someone is probably comforted in the fact that someone has his back...that someone can rationalize his actions...what do my friends have? Funeral arrangements to be made....no....not good enough.

Anyway...sorry for my depressing thoughts on a Saturday night. I'm going to bed. Forgive me.

Peace to you all.

I'm sorry for your friend's loss. :(

It's understandable to feel pain that someone who was brought up 'the right way' dies doing something completely selfless but if you were to ask his parents - I don't doubt they wouldn't change a thing in the way he was brought up. A terrible loss. Can only hope the cliche of time healing wounds helps.

Sorry for your loss, it's truly tragic.

Chances are if this young man would of stopped the assault, the woman would of just gone back to her abuser.

To answer your question, If you're not a cop and see something going down NOT on your property, you call the cops, observe, and be a witness. There are mean people in this world who don't care how or what actions they take, and how those actions may affect others. Don't bring a knife to a gun fight, and if it a fair fight, you aren't prepared enough.

Please don't take my response to your question as cruel, for that is not my intention. However, when you get involved in other peoples business, particularly an assault, ANYTIME you physically get involved, there is a good chance someone can draw a weapon. People tend to forget that even one good hit to the throat can kill someone.

I'm not taking it as cruel, sadly, I know you're right....but I hate that that's the reality in the world we live in today.

I'm just trying to put myself in the position you describe (bold part)...I don't know if I could do it...I don't know if I could stand by and WATCH someone physically harm another person, whether it's a stranger or a friend. I know it's probably the proper thing to do, I know if that's what this boy did he'd be alive today, he'd probably have a crazy "Friday night story" to tell and he may have regretted not helping, but he'd be ALIVE.

Thank you everyone. The family has a long road ahead....it's horrible no matter what, but considering the fact that they're about 5000 kms from home and have the ordeal of transporting his body home is another nighmare in itself.

I want to help but I'm 6000 kms from home and won't even see them until I get back off this rotation, which is why I think I find this so difficult, I want to be grieving with my friends and family...this feels so unnatural.

You announce in a loud voice, while staying clear of the altercation, that you have just phoned the police and they are coming. If someone knows they are doing wrong, chances are they'll stop. If they don't stop and are willing to continue even knowing the police are coming, they are very determined, and if YOU try to get involved, you will become a part of the altercation (not to mention if you get involved and the police show up, they don't know what your part in the altercation actually is).

One scenario you're always given taking a concealed carry class is what happens if you see two people fighting each other and one is about to kill the other and you don't know how the altercation started. Do you use your handgun to intervene? The answer is no.

That is not to say that if you're carrying and while in public someone pulls out a gun and starts to shoot people randomly that you can't take deadly action. Also by chance if someone is on my property fighting and I tell them to stop and they don't, I have more measures available to end the fight. T
