Ahhh man.... Guy I keep telling you not to be afraid to call me if you have these types of issues.. :(

From past experience I could have told you that the first driver you needed to update would have been the other PCI Bridge device. It controls almost everything on your MOBO that Windows sees.. From there all you had to do was go to the Asus Web site and Pick up the latest Driver for Network Adapters which was the Unknown Device showing in your Device Manager.. But Fixing PCI Bridge device could have automatically found the driver for you..

Sorry I don't always log on at the right time and check all the roll down of threads.. :mad

All is good I guess with Windows 7 but keep that in mind..

Cheers buddy..

I know Francis and it's not that I don't wanna talk to you. The way I see it is if I post a problem here and it gets solved it just might help someone else down the road.

ps.... I've got my sights on a hotdamn ASUS laptop. Intel Core i7-740M CPU, 4 gig DDR3 RAM, 500 gig H/D @ 7200rpm, ATI Radeon HD5730 1 gig video, 16" LED Screen, Windows 7... bla..bla..bla On sale for $1129.00 Waddaya think?

high dollar.

for that kind of money, you can probably get 16 GB memory and a 2 TB HDD in a desktop with a bigger monitor and outrageous sound system to go with the outrageous graphics.

Well there's three problems with that as I see it.

The first one is my location. I live north of the 49th where the retailers like to gouge the consumer.

The second one is equally concerning. It's tough to haul a desktop system and have a 24" monitor sitting on your lap.

The third one is... I already have a very good desktop system.

well. i'm not much of a consumer and don't do retail if i can help it. i've been filling boxes full of electronic components since the days when you had to solder the transistors, resistors and capacitors to the boards one at a time and i know what i can do with $1000 in a parts store or on ebay or craigslist these days.

it just seems awful high when i'm looking at ads here offering some pretty smoking looking configurations under $700. i don't hardly even see systems costing more than a grand in the big store ads.

Just for shits and giggles go to Best Buy's American site. Pick a few computers and the go to their Canadian site and compare. Bloody outrageous.

Back in the 80's I built a complete component stereo system I purchased at Heathkit. It was pretty impressive when it was done which btw worked the first time I plugged it in and turned it on. Unfortunately they no longer sell that sort of stuff which is sad. They made quality stuff and it was fun to put together. I believe they went the way of the dinosaur.

how much of that difference is because of the currency values?

specialty computer stores will sell empty cases and anything you want to fill them. though i haven't seen any empty laptop cases, you can get the parts.

it's been a long time since i even heard the word heathkit. if you're in too small city, too far from the distribution points, retail prices are going to be higher due to the smaller quantities ordered and increased transportation costs. you need to look online -- even if you're buying a ready built laptop.

you're going to pay much less. you just need to exercise more caution because you're buying sight unseen. ebay seller ratings are a good start. i just spent a few hundred bucks on gemstones for jeweling there. everything looked good in the pictures and i was getting prices like i pay at gem shows. all the sellers had good reputations. i'll let you know if everything lands looking as good as it did in the pictures.

None. Our bucks are pretty much equal. It's always been cheaper in the US than here and the merchants wonder why we cross the line to shop.

Nope. I like to touch, feel and experience. It's a hell of a lot easier to return if need be as well.

I much prefer to buy new. I like to be the first to break something.

i thought there was only about 70 cents of yours to one of ours. where exactly are you?

i know how you feel about being able to touch things. it's especially important with gemstones and i'm on edge waiting to see what i bought.

ebay and craigslist both will have new merchandise discounted. i got a soprano sax that retails for about $600 for a little less than $200 last year at ebay. the return policy of their best sellers makes it worth the risk. if you know you can send it back and it's new, the savings make it worth trying.

really dude, 1100 bucks buys much more computer than what you were talking about down here. i could probably match those specs at a store here for about $600.

I have a simple question Guy... Why those specs? That machine is better suited for a gamer and I really don't see you as a gamer. Or is it a matter of just wanting the fastest/best on the market?
It just seems like a lot of overkill unless you are playing the latest and greatest games and you need 60fps video.

I'm not a gamer in the true sense of the word but I do like to hammer it out with Battlefield Bad Company 2. :D

From what I've been able to uncover is if I want something with a good 7200 rpm hd I gotta step up a notch. The real reason is the video card, monitor and processor though. I dragged home a laptop with 4 mb ram, a 512 video card and my photo editing programs took forever to do what I want done yesterday so I returned it. ( I forget the exact specs ) I tried to calibrate the display with my Spyder and I couldn't even come close to matching the colors. That's top priority for me and I'm sure you understand why.

To sum it up I don't need or want the fastest/best on the market but I do want something that fills my picture editing requirements and for that I think I have to step up a couple of notches. I'm not rich but I don't have a problem spending dough to get quality. If it wasn't for the editing and display issue I'm sure the cheap one I initially bought would have been just fine. Make sense?

your reasoning is totally sound. it isn't just games that need a machine with some guts. just watching you boob videos online can get annoying because of the lag in a slower machine.

i still think you can shave a few hundred bucks, especially in the seattle-vancouver 'silicon forest', if you stay out of places like best buy. look for a liquidator out there somewhere. they'll have what's called old new stock. last year's models unused.
