There was a lovely crescent moon out at sunset this evening so I went out and took some pics.

Taken during twilight

Taken after it had gotten dark

This shot it cool, though slightly out of focus. The bright "star" by the trees is Venus. The little dipper thing is the Pleiades. I didn't even realize the Pleiades were there until after I'd taken the picture. :D

The moon (over exposed) with the Pleiades. I kinda like this one too.

I wish I'd been able to get some pictures yesterday and the night before. The night before the moon was a very thin sliver and fairly close to Venus. Would have made for some nice pictures right at sunset. Yesterday the Pleiades were just above the moon. Ah well, some other time...

I like the last two shots best :thumbup

Here's the thing - I know jack about constellations and what's out there. I could perhaps point out... the moon :p Impressive if you're a star-gazer who knows the name of stuff out there.

I LOVE astronomy. When I was working nights in Kentucky I bought a book about astronomy and constellations and spent many a night sitting outside the barn looking at the sky. I would love to do astrophotography but that requires equipment far beyond my price range. :(

The Pleiades isn't actually a constellation. It's a star cluster. To the naked eye it appears as a fuzzy patch in the sky close to the constellation Taurus. Those with good eyesight or binoculars (or a DSLR camera, apparently :ninja) can pick out the dipper formation of the brighter stars in the cluster. :D

Actually, I just realized this now. Do you see that V of stars by the tree in the last picture? That is the head of Taurus! :eek I didn't realize I'd gotten a constellation in my picture! :willy_nilly: The brightest star at the top of the left side of the V (between the branches of the tree) is Aldebaran...the eye of the bull. Oh, I'm tickled pink now! :D

It's partly cloudy tonight and the clouds are moving fairly fast. It made for some interesting effects. I took a number of pictures and came away somewhat satisfied with a few.

Oh, I forgot to say what settings I used. Shutter speed was 1 second, f-stop of 5.6, ISO was 400 and focal length was 200mm but I cropped those two pics a bit after I took them.
