It's a natural progression. Primitive man needed muscles. Modern man, not so much although there are fields were muscles like ground military combat, and logging, maybe construction (depending) muscles are a must. However as time goes by machines do more and more of the work and the trend is accelerating not declining. Human soldiers won't be able to physically compete with Terminators, human brains won't be able to compete with super intelligent computers and that is where we are headed.

This is very true. Also, the human race is considerably larger than they were in the days of primitive man. Primitive man, Neanderthal Man, were much shorter than we are today.

Man is stronger than ever, it's just now those strengths are way beyond physical strength. Although, with modern training techniques, I would hazard a guess that the strongest examples of man we have nowadays are far stronger than any primitive man that has previously lived.

Is he really wrong? Sports among kids are made "less violent", rampant obesity, too much time spent indoors, modern obsession with comfort and safety coupled with liberal parenting styles...I don't see how this does not lend to men becoming weaker.

The article is addressing long term changes in physiology, not something that would happen over the last 50 years. So your examples don't fit the topic. It's like saying the heat from my grill this summer had an effect on glacial melting...

That steak is long gone...

I never had any luck getting steaks perfect on the grill until I just learned the secret... Now my steaks come out perfect, what a huge difference from what I used to do.
Now I need to pick up a few steaks on the way home. :D

Of course people have evolved differently over the years. When you live in an Ice Age, yeah only the burly strong men and women would survive, and not to a very old age at that. I would rather be in this time, considering I have asthma and without my Advair I wouldn't have lived to the age I am, symptom free. I say YEA for the modern life!!

I doubt asthma would've been around back then.

It wouldn't have been around as prevalent due to less pollution, but my asthma is triggered by certain foods, milk, pet hair, molds, I almost died a few times as a baby, I wouldn't have survived the Ice Age I am sure!

It's all in the heat and time...

I marinade the steak for several hours before cooking it (use and good marinade)
I get the grill as hot as it can, then lay the steaks right over the flame.
For 1" thick steaks I leave them for 4 minutes then rotate them 90 degrees (this gives a good cris cross pattern)
Then I flip them after 4 minutes and do it again. So the steaks get exactly 8 minutes on each side.
Then you let the steak "rest" for 5 minutes to let the juices flow.

It seems simple, but the timing made all the difference for a very tender steak.
Mine would always come out tough before I started timing them on high heat.
